To put it quite simply, he was the leader of the Red Army and (I think) the military mastermind behind the revolution.

Except that his role in the revolution was in the October/November Revolution and the Tsar was overthrown in February/March Revolution. The Red Army doesn't form until after the second revolution.

Trotsky, as a leading Menshevik, was an outspoken critic of the Tsar.

When did he then become a Bolshevik leader?

He doesn't join the Bolsheviks until some time after his return to Russia in May 1917 (three months after the Tsar was overthrown). He was sympathetic to Bolshevik ideas on his return to Russia but still took some time to actually join them.

He had been working for various newspapers in France and Spain and elsewhere writing against the war and against the Tsar but he wasn't in Russia until after the Tsar's overthrow.
