A group of prominent Australians is calling for a ban on the sale of soft pornographic magazines in mainstream retail outlets.

In a letter to the Standing Committee of Attorneys-General, the group asks for a review of the rules which allow magazines like Penthouse and Playboy to be sold in newsagents, supermarkets and petrol stations.

The group also wants a review of the censorship laws governing the ratings of so-called 'lads mags' like Zoo and Ralph.

Signatories to the letter include the former chief justice of the Family Court Alastair Nicholson, and the Reverend Tim Costello from World Vision Australia.

Reverend Costello says while pornographic images are available on the internet, making the magazines so widely available is leading to the early sexualisation of children.

"There is a tide of commodifying sexuality, robbing children of innocence, and I think that's why this letter is important," he said.

"In many ways what happens on newsstands is communicating a message that this is publicly acceptable.

"Adults, everybody who walks in to just buy their milk or pay for their petrol, buy their paper, is saying this is normal, this is what we now embrace.

"And I think this is particularly devious in the signals it sends to children."

In fairness, when I walk into a newsagent I don't get greeted with supermodels' boobs (sadface). I'm thinking the reverend and the former chief justice stumbled into an adult shop by accident.

When will the censorship, or at least the attempts at it, end?

That's fuckin' stupid.

Kids have about 1000x easier access to pornography on the net than they do in newsagents. So, you might as well inject your goddamn useless filter into the internet for the same reason: "because we let it go on, it's acceptable". If any child believes it's acceptable among common society, it's because their parents didn't inform them otherwise. I'm absolutely sick to death of everything going wrong with children being blamed on everything but their parents.

I wouldn't consider Zoo magazine 'soft pornography'.

It's the same shit you'd see on Home and Away.

And aren't actual soft pornographic magazines covered with a black piece of plastic, with only the title of the magazine showing?

This call to ban was actually done by Islamic organizations.

yeah they are.

but lol, i always notice the women with their enormous breasts on the zoo magazines with nothing more than a thin tiny piece of rag between them and the customers - not because I'm consciously looking at them (for obvious reasons) but they just stand out. I mean, i'm looking for the news paper and i cant find them because these giant boobs are in my way :vcross:

what i am actually concerned about is the type of music being exposed to younger children. i mean, i know a little 9 year old girl who absolutely adores lady gaga and continuously sings "i wanna take a ride on your disco stick" at the top of her voice.

Come on bro, soft pornography is actual tits and vag. I'd consider Playboy to be 'soft porn'.

Yep that's a genuine concern. It's just like when I listen to rap music about killing cops, I immediately rush out to murder police officers.

I never see a shred of evidence that children being exposed to sexually suggestive material is actually harmful. Why should we pretend like sexuality doesn't exist?
