That's fuckin' stupid.

Kids have about 1000x easier access to pornography on the net than they do in newsagents. So, you might as well inject your goddamn useless filter into the internet for the same reason: "because we let it go on, it's acceptable". If any child believes it's acceptable among common society, it's because their parents didn't inform them otherwise. I'm absolutely sick to death of everything going wrong with children being blamed on everything but their parents.
Lol for internet pornography, they have a page for "I am 18 years and older".
It works lol. I used to be scared that I'd go to jail. (looong time ago)

The question is are children mature enough to handle all the baggage that comes with knowing about sexuality? Can they handle it?
i was exposed to straight porn at the age of 8 - cus this 10 year old turkish girl (who was my neighbour) stole this porn magazine from her uncle and showed it to me. I remember looking at the pictures and wondering why are all the guys peeing on that poor woman? I also remember having the incredible urge to pee.

i turned out fine... i think

Yes.

What is there to handle? Sex is a perfectly normal, natural, healthy thing. The only reason people sometime feel weird or embarrassed about it is because of all the artificial taboos we have created about sex.

I'm not denying all that Jenny. But even if they are artificial taboos, it might be interesting to know exactly why we imposed them upon ourselves and have so rapidly dismantled them.

So you encourage sex between non-emotionally mature 12 year olds because they've seen and heard it within the media? As well as the pregnancy that comes with it? I mean, fair enough if you do, I'd have to disagree with you though.

Provide evidence that 6-11 year olds knowing about sex leads them to actually having sex....

I encourage them knowing ABOUT sex and being able to discuss it openly. Not having sex.

It shouldn't be about stopping people from having sex.

It should be about encouraging healthy attitudes to sex. So using protection, the rights a person has over their body, the fact that sex should be a positive thing that makes you feel good. And I suppose these magazines do have some part to play in that; they should (and probably do..?) only encourage safe, consensual sex.

13 year olds are going to have sex with each other, no matter what we do. Might as well talk to them so that they go about it with the right attitude. Forcing sex into the shadows just makes it seem dirty and shameful, when there's nothing wrong with it.

Fair enough. I agree.

I remember being taught about the opposite gender's body, etc. in year 2. It was a coed lesson and the females were taught the same about males. I think I'm pretty well adjusted.

but if all the "mystery" surrounding sex was removed and it was explained to them in an appropriate context... then would they see the need to explore it themselves?

how would you explain sex in an appropriate context?

Porn mags on the shelves usually have a depiction of a human body, not actual sexual acts.

This is more a question of their ability to handle 'near nudity' than 'sex'.
