Which one? And was it Lotus-tuned? (I know it's a bit of a cop out but in all honesty, I quite like the way the Gen2 handles- better than expected)

Today I drove a 350kW 300zx with cambered tires that were bald on the inside and brakes that needed the rotors machined. No rego and no insurance. Was only about half a kay but we had to move it.

99/00 318i or 323i
MAYBE 320ci if my dad lets me

but if its an e46, black and manual im over the moon. :)
Hmm... considering it's a ten year old base model Bimmer, are you sure you really want to go down that route? On the plus side, if it's a 318i or 320i, it was probably owned by very safe parents who didn't drive hard at all... not sure how common the manuals would be.

As for the 320Ci, a beautiful car but not sure how good a condition it'll be in since a lot of these have been bought up by the "sex spec" crowd.

true, ill probably only buy from an older owner & a car with lowest kms as possible. but even though theyre 10 years old, bimmers are generally pretty reliable arent they? i dont really want to buy a 318i cos thats only a 1.9L engine and the car weighs like 1.8 tonnes

yeah i agree, the ones ive seen look decent though. no manual however, ive only seen good examples with steptronic/auto

Electrical issues can hit pretty hard (e.g. that cool red-ish LCD on the dash from Bimmers of that generation had lots of issues as they wore out) and gauges become inaccurate. That being said you never know... only the lemons make it to the internet.

Wait and see how the market goes at year end... I think there's a lot more imported vehicles which are trying to be sold on from their initial importation but noone wants to buy. Maybe get a good deal on a 350GT (or are these prohibited?)...

Honestly, as long as you're not hooning your car then whatever you feel comfortable spending is fine for a first ride.

I think they might be.

Oops I misread his Q as what to buy with $20k... and yeh, there isn't really a threshold. Keep in mind that as a newbie driver, chances are you will **** up and if anything, underpowered cars are a great way to learn how to drive 'properly' and not rely on electronics or technology (or power) to get you out of trouble. I learnt on a 1.3L Daihatsu Terios which had no stability, no handling, and no power. Taught me a lot about being very pre-emptive (throttle lag in roundabouts, risk of tipping over, etc) in daily driving. Also note that if your first P plater car is a Bimmer, even a 10 year old one, you aren't going to appreciate the dynamics of the car or how it differs from normal cars... ruins the fun IMO.

Too right. I learnt to drive on a 1996 Corolla (piece of crap) then a '96 VW Jetta. Moving to an '08 Liberty was a like a revelation. I disagree with underpowered cars, its easier for a newbie driver to lane change with something that has a bit more grunt and make the first few months inherently safer.

On the other hand an underpowered car forces you to give way a lot more often and it helps "calm the nerves". With a bit more power you may get a bit tempted to gun it more often but regardless, I can see why they have power restrictions. Even now I'm on my fulls and have moved on to various other cars, I still get tempted to put the foot down a bit.

Well yea, but something with say 80kw per ton isn't going to make you gun the motor but it'll have a decent amount of in-gear accel when you need it. I also agree with the power restrictions but its idiotic the way it was implemented. Turbo chargers and cyl numbers...really? Power to weight ratio is the way to go. I hate my Red Ps, being forced to drive 90 in a 110 zone can be pretty dangerous at times.
