I've heard actuarial has got more employment oppotunities, but I feel that maths is kinda more interesting. so what do you reckon are the pros and cons?

and which uni is the best for each ?

well it's a lot easier to switch from maths to finance/actuarial studies, than to switch from finance/actuarial to math, so by doing a maths degree you'd be keeping your options open.

you can do a B. Actuarial studies/ B science and major in maths, and you do maths in actuarial studies anyways.

Can always do maths then some masters of something after that if you're worried about employment opportunities.

By doing actuarial studies you sort of narrowed your employment spectrum towards that field so you have to sure you want to do actuarial studies.

You have more employment options doing mathematics because it is a much broader discipline so you can consider areas such as pure mathematics, applied mathematics and modelling which includes applications in physics and engineering as well as economics or finance.

The best option is to do both.

Do Mathematics and Commerce (Majoring in Actuarial Studies) at UNSW.

Try a double degree. The Sci part will let you do maths, cpu, phys,a language etc. Hence, it's more flexible and the actuarial part will allow you to do some applied maths/modelling etc. Maybe, this is bad advice but it was my rationale behind choosing com/adv.maths.

this question may be a bit noobish, but I'm asking it anyway---what do you actually learn for acturial studies?

maths is alright. if u can rote learn some hard questions' solutions u will be fine because easy questions are quite easy.so u can get good marks in class exam

edit: lectures + tuts are always there for u. i sometimes hit some lecturers with hard questions so they give me solution. i just go home and rote learn them crazy

If you want to work in finance do finance. Employers tend to employ them over maths majors.

Thanks first year. Once you get to third year maths is nothing like this. It's all very hard work.
