Think about it, you know we've always seen blokes around that 'punch above their weight', but it's very infrequent that you see a guy going out with a woman well below their overall fitness.

Because for all that women say about modern life, women are still judged almost 90+% on physical appearance. All of the bullshit about SNAG's aside, this is the primary reason a man will engage you in conversation or try to sleep with you. It's because you are attractive to him.

Men consider different things attractive, overall, but cultures tend to have fairly similar things to be considered attractive within that culture. Caucasians, for instance, find breasts and hips to be more attractive than waif-like girls, blacks are much the same, preferring a large posterior to those without substantial endowment in the hips and breasts department. Asians prefer more child-like women, but ones that have elongated faces and the like.

For a woman without these characteristics, finding a mate is quite difficult.

For men, on the other hand, those of us without ripped chiseled bodies, bright blue eyes, gorgeous brown hair and chiseled jaws, finding a woman above our leagues is fairly straightforward, because of how women choose mates.

Physical attractiveness is surely part of it, but humour and personality are also major factors. Followed by wealth and security, because women generally want security.

This is why you see sometimes schlubby overweight dudes with stunners, because they are either pretty damn funny, wealthy or generally a good person to be around.

Sure the women will fool around occasionally with the man who looks like he was carved from marble, but more often than not, a man being able to punch above his weight is fairly easy.

Discuss.

i agree completely that women have it worse off, simply because they are usually looking for someone who they can have a relationship with.
guys are the ones generally looking more for fun, therefore they focus on looks. so girls who aren't that pretty or hot are left behind.
but then the same can be said for guys when the girls are the ones looking for someone to do with looks...
i think it comes down to people's judgements and what they're looking for in another person, but its still unfair that women are the ones who get scrutinised for their looks.

what if they have too much fun and then want to settle down? is it wrong for a girl to not want to get on it every minute of the day if shes twenty?

Well if a man is going to be stuck with a with a stunning lady who loses her looks but keeps her attitude (which we're assuming is lack luster) I think the woman is better off than him.

If she chooses with a more well rounded attitude ie. not just looks, well then I'm happy to say she'll eventually be the one who's better off.

Unless of course he leaves her for a younger woman in which case ALIMONY

I don't know... On the other hand, men are pretty much expected to do all of the pursuing and take the most risks. Women basically just need to turn up to classes / bars / yoga / anything to get hit on, and they can control their love life by simply saying no until the right thing comes along...

Is this an unfair statement? From what I've heard women generally get approached a lot more than men, and they are expected to take far fewer risks...

I'm not convinced that all men just want to get laid though and don't want a proper relationship... just through knowing plenty of counter examples...

so according to this theory... A funny, wealthy, interesting and average to above average looking man who was interested in an average looking women for a relationship, not just sex, would be so against the norm that he would certainly easily succeed... Does that sound right to you though?

I agree.
Of course the more attractive girls get hit on by guys, but thats the case with both sexes. People will always be judged on their physical appearances first. But I know so many boys where attractiveness isn't enough for them. They find some babe, hookup etc but unless they have some humour/awesome personality it is never enough.
I believe when it comes to crunch time guys are much like girls in terms of relationships. They just want someone who loves them in return, someone who understands them and is willing to support them.

I think women have an easier time, because they have usually have a bigger dating pool

if a woman is staying in a shit relationship, that's her fault because if she's not super ugly/fat she could always be with someone else
