Awesome, I definitely want to do Hieroglyphics and Coptic, although I don't know if I can do both or if I have to choose. I also wouldn't mind learning latin. Someone also told me it is almost necessary to do German (modern language) if you want to be able to research anything in Egyptology.

You generally can't do ancient languages in your first year - you need a to do full year first. I would start with Middle Egyptian (= Hieroglyphs), then move from there to Coptic if you really want to. But don't do Coptic early unless you have an interest in early Christianity, imo.

The problem with doing Middle Egyptian and then Coptic is that you expect continuity in the language when it's really only apparent in some of the vocab. I mean, Middle Egyptian was used ~2200BC-1000BC whilst Coptic was from the ~50AD-1700AD, so there's a big time gap. Ie the whole structure of the language changes and it's not apparent unless you do Middle Egyptian, Late Egyptian (which is offered occasionally), Demotic (which isn't offered in the southern hemisphere) and then Coptic.

As you say, consider doing the German reading course as early as possible, although I personally don't think it's enough - I basically did a full stream of German as well and I still don't think my German is as good as it could be.

I do political science, political theory and security studies so that's basically all i know well. I know my university, the Australian National University has the largest variety of political science courses in the country - hence why I went there.

This is there offering this year in political science: http://studyat.anu.edu.au/majors/ARTSMPOLS;courses.html

they're the only unviersity which has an Internship programme with the US Congress http://studyat.anu.edu.au/courses/POLS3021;details.html Flinders is closing their programme
about half of the coruses are only offered at the ANU
I have my heart set on doing Political Thought and Theory at Cambridge, so the only course in the country on Classical Marxism is great, the only course on critical theory and the Frankfurst school is even better.

different unis have different specialisations, in my own area USYD has a great political economy department, but a very poor political science, international relations, security and government departments. As the ANU trains the country's diplomats and all things political it's reassuring that the best palce is in Canberra.
USYD has the most languages yet it doen't have turkish or russian major world lanugage but it has hebrew and Yiddish. but the ANU has the most Asian languages. Melbourne is the only one which teaches Swedish etc
