Purpose-made back-pack all the way. Shoulder-bags lead to shoulder/back issues, especially when carrying books/laptop etc.

Try use SAS/MATLAB/Mathematica/MAPLE on a netbook.
No one said anything about a netbook, the best laptop specs are like a Core i7 and 12 GB RAM? Yeah, you don't need a huge 17" desktop replacement for that, you can get them in a 14 incher.

i7 1.73ghx, 4GB of RAM, NVidia Geforce GT 330M, 16" screen, 500GB hard drive. 4.6kgs, the only problem with it is the fact that I picked an i7 so my battery life is only 3 hours tops. It sucks.

Mines a bit like yours:
i7 2.8 GHz, 8 GB RAM, Nvidia, 13 inch screen though.... 1.5 Kgs, and 4.5 hours tops.

It's your huge screen eating up most of the battery, the i7 is only a bit more power hungry than a high-end Core 2 Quad.

the 2010 macbook pros arnt bad, i bought one for my 2011 hsc and uni. 15" Core i7 2.66ghz, 4gb ddr3 Ram, 500gb hdd, nvidia gt 330m 512mb, its about an inch thick and the battery lasts for like, ever.... plus my school has mac chargers coming out of its ass so i never run outa juice, got most of my text books on it cept for economics so its turned out lighter for me, i just carry it in my sachel with a pencil case and a folder for handouts....
