Take away your gaming consoles man, it's not that hard to resist gaming if you actually want to go well in the HSC. Sell them this year, in all honesty, mine just collected dust all year round.

I dont think you should completely remove it, because itll just make you want to play it more. Just limit your playing time or gradually reduce it until you dont play anymore.

I was playing about an hour a day during the weekday and still managed a decent atar

I had the same problem, but completely stopped playing before year 11 and now im doing fine. The first few weeks after quitting you'll want to play really bad but you'll soon get over it as long as you don't think about games entirely.

OH and also, never EVER play games again until like in the holidays or after the HSC or you'll just get addicted again and have to go through addiction again. I know it's a long time but games will affect you dramatically.

Try using gaming as a motivator, rather than a distraction. Tell yourself "Ok, if I study for the next two hours, I can play for an hour". Give yourself a reason to study.

Haha, I actually watch SC2 replays on youtube. I am so sad. =(

I have tried doing that before like a year ago but every time I played games, I forgot what I learnt. xD

Try doing a ten minute revise of the work you did after you come back. It should be enough to keep what you learnt in your head.

Doesn't work people who get 99.95 do it without playing games.

Depends on what OP is aiming for. In any case, you shouldn't be giving up everything you enjoy just because the HSC is on.

Gaming is a big distraction! Get off games, Facebook, MSN or moderate your time on it!

To combat this problem I would suggest you ask a family member to hide the games somewhere safe and retrieve them after your HSC. Most people enjoy playing games because their friends play it too or like the socialism. That would be the ideal option. But if you think you will somehow go crazy without these games. I would suggest planning a study timetable and sticking to it whilst also leaving time for playing games once a week.

Think about it this way, if games distract you and you don't get the marks you want for your course, then mostly likely you will choose to repeat and waste another year but if you moderate your gaming amount and get a good marks, then you will be able to spend more time gaming after your HSC. You could also try rewarding yourself each time you stick to your study timetable.

Don't worry too much about it if you are only playing for games for a while, it's only natural. It takes time to develop a fixed study pattern.

You're just going to have to get some self-control. Drill it into your head your priorities, the HSC is important. However, remember it is not everything. I wouldn't go out of your way to sell the console, however do try to limit yourself. The more distractions you can deplete for this year, the better the end result will be. :) I have the same problem, however I have extremely restricted my time on games.

Good luck in your battle! Remember this year is important! Gain some self-control. You can do it. :)

i'm a gamer, but I never get addicted to any games. But yes I know what you mean, I usually use games as a stress relief when I have been studying too much. However, if I know I have work due, then I always limit my time playing games. If not i'll just rev up games like theres no tomorrow. :) its all about self-control.

and btw if your asian (which most likely you are) then it should be even more easy for you. :)

ps: ask yourself this, do you want an ATAR of <80 or do you want an atar of 90 +

Ok, my mate is a hardcore gamer, he has an epic rig (like $4000+), he's awesome, he plays in comps and such. He kept asking me all year how to stop. I told him, get your power cable and give it to your mum. He never did and kept on playing, promising me that he'd control how much he played. His ATAR was 55.

Just take your power cable and give it to someone who you can trust not to give it back. If you do well in test you can get it back for a period of time.

I quit FB for a few months, and I reckon it helped heaps, so giving up gaming should do wonders.

I don't understand why people love gaming so much. I mean it's not that hard to stop. just convince yourself that you're a loser for playing them too much (which you probably are) and get some friends. When you wanna hang out but they have stuff on, do school work. Done.
But yeah, I'm never giving up facebook.
