should i drop down from 2unit maths to general? (1 Viewer)

hey guys this is my first post,so im currently in year 12 and i thinking of dropping down to general maths,year 12 started last year for me and there was one test already which i got 66% i think the weighting of it was 10% or 20% im not sure i dont remember this was in 2 unit maths. i got one of the highest marks in the class even though it wasnt a good mark.

So now this year im having a poor start a barely understand the work in the topics i mean i can do the easier questions of the topic but when it comes down to the harder ones i dont understand it to well. so do you guys think i should drop down to genral maths?,would this effect my atar in anyway? please help thank you in advance

you should keep it , if you still have a reasonable rank you can still catch up and it wont have any really significant effect on your final mark

i seriously dont know like in the inside i feel like im going to fail it, like last year in year 11 i really screwed my yearly test and only got 35%. i just dont feel confident in 2 unit maths. i mean the last test got reasonably lucky. would it be good if i went to general maths and ace that? then staying in 2 unit and getting reasonable marks just say maybe 50-60%?

lol probably is your best bet, but why is everyones immediate thought to drop it, all it takes is like 2wks of solid review of the yr11 stuff. its same story every year people slack off in yr11 and it comes to bite them in the ass come yr12 , cant say it anymore times lol.

general is ALOT easier, but you could possibly become bored and lose motivation for the subject

more importantly what are you looking to do after school??

in terms of job, or further education

if you are looking at science or engineering ( and to a lesser extent commerce ) it is highly recommended that you atleast have 2unit maths

andy69 sounds like you have already made up your mind, if 2 unit is to hard drop it just do whatever you feel comfortable with I'm in virtually the same situation with english.

like seriously its not that i dont put efforts into it im doing good in most of my other subjects and in the first half of year 11 i was doing well in 2 units maths but then doing after the 2nd term i really started to struggle i barely even got the other topics like i would just sit down and try to do the homework and i couldnt get have way knowing how to do the questions. About the subject i was never really a maths fan my brother kind off told me to go into it. so another question if i drop down to general would i have to learn the stuff of last year?

yes, there is a fair bit of stuff in general that is not in 2unit, and you would need to learn it all by yourself, ALL maths subjects test both yr11 and yr12 content in the exams

you are probably better just scraping maths all together ( if you are going to do anything ) , rather than just dropping down. If you have enough units to permit that is

nah im not sure about that option here are my subjects 12 units altogether, i.p.t,legal studies, business studies, english standard, maths 2 unit and geography. The reason i dont like the option is im not sure about ipt its a pretty hard subject for me the rest i do alright in.

The maths content of Gen Maths is trivial though some of the topics are a little harder. But it does not mean in that case you automatically 'ace' gen maths because it has different coverage and emphasis. If you had to switch the better time would have been before you started yr12. In gen maths you have to start all over again learning different things.

If you can afford it get help quick. If you are falling behind because of poor teaching a good tutor can help you. If you live in the Eastern suburbs, Bored Of Fail 2 can help you and, unlike me, is quite cheap. Talk to your parents - see if they are prepared to get you a 1-on-1 tutor ASAP. If you live in my area I'd be happy to see you at Epping or Eastwood library and advise you (free). But get help quickly.

then just keep two unit. Sorry to be frank but you will prob be a bit screwed no matter which one you do ( catching up on the general stuff will be a pain ) , so you might as well as be screwed with the higher scaling one

Hey Drongoski im not really sure what decision i should make i know it doesnt mean that i will automatically ace general maths i just feel like i have a better chance in it, im prepared to learn the old things again if i have to, and i dont live with my parents i live with my brother were not very wealthy, yeah i know it would of probably been better if i dropped it at the beggining of year 12 but thats not an option now. so im seriously not sure i might have a look at the topics in both general and 2 unit maths and make my decision.

well whatever you decide make sure you do it quick, because the longer the leave the decision the worse you will be ( both ways, if you drop down or if you dont )

Just think about the realistic marks you could achieve in both if you worked hard from now on in. I'm sure you can improve your advanced maths skills with a tutor. You may find general easier to get a higher mark, but the scaling difference will probably mean it may have little to no effect on your ATAR.

Also another thing to consider, if it wiser to go 10 unit so you have more time to improve either your ipt or maths than find both hard. Good luck OP!

My gut feeling is you are better off sticking to 2U but without knowing better I could well be wrong. If you can't afford a private tutor, get help somehow - from your friends, from bos, from your teachers or wherever free help is offered.

ive thought about it now and ill pribably stay in 2 unit and work my ass off does anyone know what is the average uai to get into university.
