Hey, I am quickly brushing over my ancient notes before the exam. I know its not possible to go in detail on everything to do with Pompeii, so i'm trying to determine the most vital topics to study in regards to the core topic Pompeii and Herculaneum. By looking at past papers, I have:

- Archaeology, preservation/conservation, new technologies.
-The forum
- Religion
- Houses
- Baths
- Social structures

Anyone know if i'm missing anything?

The ethics associated with the archaeology and displaying bodies etc. That or conservation, changing tecnniques etc are the broad topics for the 10 marker.

Along what Cem is saying; it's important for you to be familiar with section III of the syllabus as those dot points are where the 10 mark question is derived from. So; Methods & Contributions of Archaeologists, changing interpretations (impact of new research and technologies), Issues if conservation and Reconstruction, and the Ethical Issues regarding the study and display of human remains.

The problem with the Core, is that it is possible for them to ask ANYTHING. I was going to add stuff to your list, but it ended up being pretty much the whole syllabus. My school has done a few assessment tasks on Pompeii, and thus have changed the topics examined each time. So, really all I can say is try to learn as much as you can. I know my school's assessments has focused on the Economy, Social Structures, Everyday Life, Religion; with Political Life, Buildings [public and private], and influences being more so minor examinable areas.

Though, that is to say that they won't ask a 6 marker on Greek and Egyptian Influences, cause they sure as hell can. Just because it's been the norm over the years to examine particular areas, doesn't mean they won't chuck a random in this year! [pray it doesn't happen though!]

My best advice, is just to try and have some concise information and evidence on each topic. It's hard I know, I only just did my half yearly exams the other week. But, it's best to try and prepare for everything, and rather than focus all your attention on specifics and then not even be examined on them at all! [The HSC sucks in the retrospect, the fact that you could be a total genius at Pompeian Religion, however in the Exam you are not even given the opportunity to flaunt your stuff!]

Best of Luck! I hope your exam goes real well! :)

Thanks for that!
Theres just so much to learn in great detail and it's the exact same for the WWI core in modern history.
At least it should be sourced-based, worst situation: I'm simply going to interpret the source until I run out of lines..

Thanks for that.

Yes, the cores for both Ancient and Modern are excessively huge! I think it's important to know the syllabus as well. For if they ask you a question on social structure, you know you need to cover men, women, freedmen and slaves in your answer.

I've done my half yearly for Ancient already. But if you wanted to bounce some ideas around, [in some sort of study fashion - I did this with friends before our exam, just talking about the content and information and it does really help! ~ Even beats the copious re-reading and memorising the facts!] I'm happy to spend some time. (More than happy actually, can't get enough of Ancient).

Again, good luck for your exam. I'm sure you'll go okay. Just don't stress about the plethora of information you have to try and remember, just focus on the content itself. n_n Sources, usually help with the connection of information to questions as well, so generally you won't 'mind-blank'. Just remember, not to focus on just what the source is portraying. [For example, in terms of Pompeian Leisure activities, we had a source that portrayed the amphitheatre, and quite a number of people in my cohort focused on gladitorial games, and didn't mentions things like drama, music, gambling, board games, prostitution, and athletics, and thus lost quite a number of marks).

PS. My apologies for my ramblings, procrastinating doing my English essay.

Yes, past papers are a must. It's the one thing my teacher stresses for us to do in terms of revision. Try and do as many as you can, I've already done some for my society option and it's a really useful way at condensing all your information into the required amount and experiencing the way to write the information in order to coincide with the question. More than happy to bounce ideas around, not sure your preferred method of communication is, just let me know if you're interested! n_n

I'm not sure what Jaundice is referring to. In terms of Modern (I also do the option; Germany: 1918-1939) but if you have a look at your syllabus, the Weimar Republic is only part of the first section. You still can be examined on (in the broadest of forms); the rise of the Nazi regime, Nazism in power, and Nazi foreign policy. I just had a flick through some past HSC papers, and there was a question on failures and successes of the Weimar Government, role of Hitler, growth of Nazism Power and also a question on Nazi propaganda (and that's only looking at 2010 and 2009!) So, sadly there are quite a few different questions they could ask for the National Study 25 mark question. n_n Oh well, at least they give us a choice in this section of the paper, so not entirely screwed!

Edit; ugh seems BoS just fixed it's time in accordance with daylight savings ended, so now posts are out of whack! D:

Thanks for that ArtemisOrthia, I'm going to do as many past papers as I can to make sure I know all of the examinable content. It would be awesome to bounce ideas on the core and other parts of the subject if you're willing to.

Jaundice, what do you mean by 33 possible essay questions? Our national study is Germany and so far all we have covered is Weimar republic. I'm not sure if you're doing Germany, but all I can think of is one question: "Why did the republic fail?" I have seen past papers and it has generally just been a variation on this, eg. What was the role of the army in the failure of the weimar republic?
