A new protest movement sparked by a policeman's ill-judged advice to women students to "avoid dressing like sluts" has taken root in the US and Canada.

Thousands of people - some dressed in jeans, others more provocatively - are taking part in marches, or "SlutWalks".

The aim, say organisers, is to highlight a culture in which the victim rather than rapist or abuser is blamed.

------

Police Constable Michael Sanguinetti had been giving a talk on health and safety to a group of students at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto when he made the now infamous remarks.

"You know, I think we're beating around the bush here," he reportedly told them. "I've been told I'm not supposed to say this - however, women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised."

there was one of these in australia the other week too.

now the cop didn't say that:
1) the rape victim should be blamed, or
2) she deserves to be raped because of her clothing choice

but still, would it lower a girl's chances yes/no

No, because generally when a real rape occurs the raper couldn't give two hoots about what a woman or man is wearing. It's the fact they want to be in a situation of power and control. It's not about the other person being sexy or slutty or whatever.

Most people who are genuinely raped, the situation isn't bread out of clubbing or going out. They're innocuous random events or it happens at home with someone you trust etc.

If someone has the intent to rape you, it's not going to matter what you're wearing, if you're a boy/girl/cat/dog whatever.

If people want to dress more demurely, I think that might have some effect on ill choices being made on consensual sex but will have no impact on rape.

Yeah sure a woman might dress like a total whore but it doesn't mean you can shove your dick in them because they're dressed like it

the cop wasn't victim blaming and if you don't realise this you're braindead

regardless of whether or not it is true, he was just saying that pragmatically, dressing conservatively will make you less of a target for rape

not that such a rape would be justified, just that it is more likely to happen

sure women should be able to walk around naked and not get raped, but if doing so makes you more of a target for rape, then doing so makes you more of a target for rape, regardless of how horrible and vile said rape and rapist is

the rallies were stupid, full of stupid fucking socialists, and the signs were just generally anti-rape, as if rapists are going to stop raping because a bunch of women got angry over it

If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the garden or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it ... whose fault is it, the cats' or the uncovered meat? The uncovered meat is the problem. If she was in her room, in her home, in her hijab, no problem would have occurred."

Rape isn't sexually motivated bro it's about power and control which means that your clothing isn't a factor taken into consideration. I mean doesn't porn cause rape because it puts sex at the forefront of every man's mind so therefore if he sees a woman dressed similarly to a porn star he must have sex with them consensually or not of course it does

My previous statement was more about me hating cops than about the actual topic at hand. The SlutWalk itself is not necessarily targeting the cop that said this initially, but more about targeting the notion of victim blaming amongst society, which is 100% retarded.
