I honestly have no idea what I want to be. I'm leaning towards a science/business degree but other than that I do not know. A part of me wants to do business degree but I didn't do anything business related in the HSC, so I don't know whether I'd like it or not. Also, would any HSC knowledge help me in UNI?

If there are no university-set pre-requisites for the subject, then there's no need to have done it in the HSC for you to continue with it in University. For example, there's no prerequisite for HSC Economics/Business Studies for a Commerce/Economics degree. There's no prerequisite for HSC Legal Studies for Law (take it from me, you pretty much learn the entire 2 years of legal studies in 1.5 weeks at university, and then, there's not really an exam for it).

HSC knowledge -does- help though, but if you want to do a Business degree, you generally should be interested in it in the first place. If not, that's fine as well, as you'll be able to catch up. :)

And on a second point - if you have no idea what you want to be, that's fine as well. I didn't know which degree I wanted to choose until -after- we got our ATARs. You can still change your UAC choices after ATARs come out - in fact, they're open until like January 5th/6th or something like that.

Yep thats spot on. For a business degree you have to have a particular interest in the field, otherwise you will not enjoy the degree. If you do enjoy it then you should definetely give it a go, i noe alot of people doing commerce/science degree, particuarly with finance and information systems majors for the respective degrees who did not do business subjects in school and are loving it.

and some asians do business and hate it.

Ask yourself, how interest are you in business. If you didnt watch TV/hear stories of $$$$ then would you still do business? A business degree=$$$$$$ i know people with commerce degree's from UNSW working at call centres.

lol! yeah, the Business degree will provide you with knowledge, you need to develop the skill by yourself to be successful.

There's people everywhere who hate what they do, transfer after a year, transfer again after that, waste of money/time.

Just do some research, go to open days, you have plenty of time to decide, we could change our preferences to the 5th of Jan iirc, so it should be plenty of time, that's about 20-25 days after the ATARs are out.

Just to add to people's responses-

Once you choose a degree at uni that is also not the end of everything- if you choose to do a combined/double degree because you are not sure what you are interested in, its always possible to drop one of the degrees if you don't like it. Similarly, there is opportunity to transfer to another degree when you are already at uni if you really don't like what you are doing - depending on what you were doing/what you want to transfer to, transferring may not add any time to your degree, or it might add a bit extra, but there's no point doing a degree you hate/aren't interested in.

I'd advise going along to uni open days, talking to the faculties, reading booklets etc. But in the end it isn't the end of everything. You also don't necessarily need to worry too much if you don't know what you want to to do after your degree - there is no problem with going to university for the sake of learning (rather than just as a purpose for funnelling you into a career), and you can always do masters/post-grad/second degree programs which can lead to a profession after an undergrad degree. It doesn't seem like it when you are in high school, but there is a lot of room to change and see what you like at university- you're not just stuck in a three year degree if you don't like it :)

If you're doing mathematics - as it's an hierarchical subject - your mathematics will give you a big head start. Like, 1/5th of my algebra this session was... complex numbers and they introduced like one or two new concepts.

I also did not do anything business related in the HSC and I'm doing Commerce. They'll teach you everything you need to know - however, I did Prelim Econ (and so like a few things popped up in Microecon this session like supply/demand, utility, etc.).

Look at where you want to be in a few years time and pick a degree that'll get you there best. I don't even know what I want to be - I just followed my Chemistry teacher's advice of "Take a science degree and go from there". But I figured, "Hey, I can take Adv. Maths science so I'll do that - and hey, I have good memories of Year 10 Commerce so I might do that too".

dont worry about choosing what you want to do, just get the highest atar you can and keep options open, if you are still considering business, have a think about bachelor of commerce/economics at UNSW.
