hey guys.
we have just started plane geometry and circle geometry and to be honest it is my weakest point. i just cant seem to be able to prove things.
so do you have any tips or resources which you could give me in order to help me.

I had a lot of trouble with circle geometry too. I haven't started plane geometry yet. What textbook do you use for maths ext. 1?
For circle geometry look for a radius & try and use that to prove the angle/s.

we use the Cambridge textbook, but she gave us a handout. we have only done little work on circle Geo more on plane but it is still killing me.

Sadly its one of the things that you need to do a truckload of, and often, so you can kind of just be able to see it. Cause if you don't see it, you'll spend 10 mins looking at it JUST trying to think about attempting it. Goodluck

I love Circle Geometry. But the most important tip I can give you other than practice is learning how to derive the laws. I use to have trouble with Circle Geometry a while back. But really, once you practice, you can see how to do a question straight away. During sleep, I usually think of mathematical equations flying around.

Note: Circle Geometry is nothing more than just little circle rules combined.

Here are my other tips.

- Draw a large diagram! (Please no tiny 1 cm ones.)

- Mark out any 90 degrees.

- Mark out what you know. (Pencil! Please, pens usually cover important pieces of information.)

- Mark out what you need. (Pencil!)

- Recall any circle rule that is applicable.

I found the Cambridge textbook quite useful for this topic. It's important that you learn where to apply each proof. You just can't read each circle geometry proof as you won't understand it. During the school holidays I suggest that you go over this topic at your own pace and try to do most of the questions. I found that I struggled because of the pace that we were going at school. Sticking the circle geometry proofs up on a wall might help too.

Circle Geometry requires sufficient knowledge of Plane Geometry. (Eg. similar & congruent triangles, collinear points, bisections.)

In addition, my teacher is going to make my class ONLY to do an extension test where we have to prove ANY of the theorems on the spot afterwards! I think this is going to be the first topic test where I fail (below 80% to me is fail D: and below 90% for some cases)

1) The thought process that should occur in your head whilst doing circle geometry questions is this, 'what do I need to prove that this statement is true?'

For example, 'prove this is a cyclic quad'. Your thought process should be, 'how do I prove something to be a cyclic quad?' You should then think, 'I can do this by proving that opposite angles are supplementary'. Tah-dah.

2)Being able to recall the properties of 2D shapes is fundamental for circle geometry. You also need to be well aware of all the circle theorems e.g. angle in a semi circle = 90 degrees.

Let's take another example, 'prove this triangle is isosceles'. Your thought process should be, 'how do I prove that a triangle is isosceles? What are the properties of an isosceles triangle?' You should then think, 'I need to either prove that two angles are equal, or two sides are equal'.

3) Obvious: Practice. Start with the easy questions to familiarize yourself with the circle theorems. I recommend Maths in Focus.

4) Remember, there is no such thing as a hard circle geometry question.

I HATE circle geometry!!!
The way I deal with it is by:
1. Reading over all the proofs and rules with diagrams.
2. Do HEAPS of questions, just to cement how to do them in your mind.
3. Do harder questions from MX2 papers and textbooks.
4. ???
5. PROFIT!!!
