what's your major in advanced maths and commerce?
I was thinking Stats/Finance when I picked it at first - I may end up doing Pure/Finance because I'm not sure how much I like stats and I like maths for the sake of maths which is what Pure is.

I think so. Someone confirm please?
If you decline your first offer in the main round (late jan) you will have to wait for 2nd round offers (early feb) and hope that your lower preference course has places still available

Choose carefully.

lol thanks, but I only wanted to do B.Bus/B.ScIT @ UTS, everything else was there to fill in the 8 left over spots :p and not really interested in Business Information Systems. I've developed this hatred towards information systems after studying it this semester in IT, hate it.

No worries, best of luck! Just wondering, any thoughts on the new UTS tower?

B Comm (Actuarial)/B Economics @UNSW
B Comm (Actuarial)/B Sci (Adv Maths) @UNSW
B Comm (Actuarial) @ UNSW

Is there any benefit to doing a double degree and if so which one out of maths and economics will compliment actuarial studies more?
also i heard that if you do maths in a combined degree your major has to be in maths, is this true?

Actuarial Studies is a course complete within itself, I believe. If you want a good complement, Economics will be good for backing up the general Commerce (I think) - though you may find yourself learning the same stuff (though I'm not sure if this happens). And for Adv. Maths - you could do Quantitative Risk to back up Actuarial, but again you may find yourself doing the same thing again.

I think the maths would probably suit you less as you'd have to take MATH1151 (Actuarial maths) along with either MATH1131/1141 (Maths 1A), if I'm not mistaken. And many of the topics there are basically the same. You'd definitely be doubling up if that's right.

HOWEVER, I may be wrong - you may want to take the trip to UNSW and talk to people at the School of Maths or the ASB to confirm stuff.

A double degree gets you out of compulsory General Education courses and it also perhaps makes you look more employable. If you do the B Sc (Adv Maths), your major is obviously going to be in maths - either statistics, pure, applied or quantitative risk.

Thanks!

The new design looks ok, beats what UTS is right now, the 2 new buildings coming up, 1 for Business and the other for IT should be good, but they'll be ready when I'm in final year :(
