You could do a double degree as uhrig suggested. Or you could pick a normal degree, and make all your elective units language subjects.

I'm doing Advance Science at UNSW at the moment and I'm taking Intermediate German B as an elective. So really, as an elective, you can choose to do anything, including learning a language. In fact, at UNSW, it'd compulsory to have a certain number of units outside of your field. However, if you do a combined degree such as comm/law or something, you'll find it difficult or just impossible to study a language - that's if you don't have arts as one of your degrees and you don't want to do extra work and you want to finish your degree in the normal time. You could also do your degree, major in whatever it is you want to major in, and also have a minor in a language.

Even then, you can always do a degree that includes languages in the first place like arts. Or arts in a combined degree. There are even other degrees you might want to look at that include learning a language like doing Science (International) at UNSW. Just a suggestion, but look it up. :)

If you do arts, then you can definitely pick up some languages.
If not, if you do a single degree, you'll most likely have some electives, and you can pick a language for that. Or if you go to a university that has general education, then you can take languages for your gen eds, which is what I did last semester :).

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking of doing an Engineering Degree, but also wanted to continue with studying Japanese. So a combined Engineering/Arts would be best?

Unless you have interests in arts other than Japanese, I suggest you only take Japanese as an elective or have a minor in Japanese. Otherwise, you'll have to fill in the rest of your arts degree with subjects you might not like. I was considering doing Science/Arts, but I settled on just Advanced Science and doing german on the side for the above reason. Give it some good thought and do research.

Yes, that would be a good choice, however that will add another year. Or you can always have language electives and not have another year.

Remember, if you do a Arts degree you have to fill in more subjects.

I was also thinking of fitting Chinese somewhere along the lines with Actuarial Studies and Advanced Mathematics at UNSW... would that be possible? even as electives?

No, I don't think so. Because you don't do electives/general-education if you're doing a double degree.

You might be able to do it just as extra subjects. So your choices are:
1. Do subjects in the summer semesters.
2. Overload during the year
3. Take longer to finish your course.

So basically, in the end, Chinese wouldn't count to your degree, but if you really want to do it, there's nothing really stopping you. You'd have to check, but I don't think you could fit it in such a way that it counts to your degree.

Yes, this is true. You could probably do it, but I doubt it would count towards anything.

i was thinking about combining with arts too...and majoring in Latin @ unsw (but then they decided to get rid of the course)
but eitherway, if you do do that, dont you still have to study other arts subjects whilst studying your major?

What the others said but also;

If you go to the Uni of Melb you can do a diploma of language concurrently with your bachelor degree.

yeah, u'll still have to do some other arts subjects, but say, if there was latin, you could do another language for your other arts subjects or something else, theres quite a lot of variety of arts subjects.
