Ok, it is really starting to get to me, and it is a problem with maths. I constantly stuff up tests, I'm good at maths, but I am really bad at doing a maths TEST. I love maths, so why is that I can do all questions that the teachers sets for practice perfectly fine, but when it comes to a test, I panic and mess things up? Is it nerves, lack of confidence, lack of practice questions? Has anyone ever had this problem before? How did you fix it?

This is a problem only with maths, all other subjects are fine. I'm better at maths than I am at other subjects! Why do I constantly mess up these tests? How do I stop panicking in test conditions? I am very good at maths, but the teachers only look at my results which aren't good.

What should I do to fix this?

Please give me some ideas because I really feel like I am underachieving in a subject I could really be doing well in.

same! :( All my potential went completely down the drain for my maths trial. And it's going to go on my final report FML, WHY COULDN'T THE SCHOOL PUT THE INTERNAL AVERAGE MARK, not trial mark dammit.

Practice papers are the key here. you also have to make sure you walk into the exam wiff a calm demeanour like a boss. then u can go ahead and ace it.

You are in Year 10. You have plenty of time. Keep practising and do past papers under examination conditions.

Yeah, the teachers probably assume I am very stupid, and that I really struggle in Maths, and that is simply not true! I am very quiet, and always do my work in class, and can do everything properly, but I just really suck at doing a maths test:( And it doesn't make any sense why I can't do well in a maths test, but I can pass other tests from other subjects without listening to anything in class. What is it with maths?

Maths is an applied subject, chances are, you're going to need to practice questions/past papers to get the gist of it.

Well, so far I have passed 4 maths tests, and failed 4, and the ones I passed, I didn't do that well in, but just passed slightly, except for one of them.

Oh, and I was told to go to my maths head teacher because I was stuck between choosing Gen Maths or 2U maths, and I didn't go because I was too scared to go because of how bad my results had been, they would probably have said General Maths anyway or worse, no maths at all.

You're crippling under exam pressure. You need to alleviate this by placing yourself under exam conditions beforehand and practice to the point where you're used to it.

I surely will start doing that in Year 11 and 12 a lot, I don't put too much of an effort into Year 10, since I know the results don't mean anything except how it impacts my confidence.

That's exactly what I am doing, infact even as I type this, I am listening to music. I don't work hard because I'm kind of lazy, but I understand all the concepts taught in Maths in class perfectly fine. I have chosen Advanced Maths next year, and praying I will be able to cope with it because I don't want to do General Maths because it scales so badly.

I think you are 3U potential. I also think you are a pessimist. My tip for you young warlock is to develop an examination technique in Year 11.

It's all about Examination Technique...
- Always underline answer requirements such as round to certain decimal places or significant figures or nearest angle, minute etc or leave straight line equation in gradient intercept or general form, etc. (I've constantly lost precious marks in the past due to this and it still happens though rarely now)
- READ THE QUESTION! (Don't skim through it, I've had bad experiences due to not reading the question properly)
- USE EVERY SINGLE MINUTE OR SECOND LEFT! DON'T HAND IN YOUR TEST EARLY! Double-check then triple-check and maybe, re-do the harder questions on scrap paper!
- Learn from your mistakes! Experience is valuable!

EDIT: I'm also in Year 10! ;)

I think you would be the only one who thinks that, so thank you for believing in me:) My tutor said that I shouldn't even be thinking about Extension 1:(

THIS! It's so true. I didn't do this for my Trial, and I paid the consequence deeply. I did past papers, but I never did them in exam conditions and when it came to exam day I was crippled by stress and panic, as I wasn't sure how fast to do my maths exam. I kept thinking about how well the the people around me would go rather than my test. It put me off completely. Luckily I've still maintained high marks throughout Year 12, so my internal is still a solid overall mark.
