I think my atar will be around the 98-99 range so it's impossible to go to usyd. So left is unsw and uws..which is better? Not sure about my umat score
though but I will get five bonus points If I go to uws coz I live in the region

If you live in the GWS area, the ATAR and UMAT cutoffs are less (I think the ATAR cutoff becomes 93.55, not sure about UMAT).

UNSW is probably best as UWS isn't as highly regarded for medicine, not saying UWS is no good, just that UNSW is generally in top 5 Univeristies in Australia. However because of this UNSW is more competitive. But if your atar is going to be about 98-99 that would be fine for USYD if you get a decent UMAT score, I know someone who got in with a 96 but great UMAT score! Good luck

If you do very well in the interview and UMAT, you could still get to USYD. If not, try UNSW. UWS should be the last Sydney located preference.

Usyd is graduate medicine and I thought you needed 99.95

To OP UNSW is seen as the better school and more prestigious so it would probably be a better first choice. However since it's medicine the uni you go to doesn't matter as much as other professions such as law or commerce, because in the end more doctors are needed, so no hospital will reject you based on the uni you attended. Also may I ask why you're only applying for those two and not others such as Wollongong etc. A lot of people in my school want to do med and they put down every possible uni in NSW and some are even applying for interstate unis.

No. The minimum requirement for USYD is 99.95. they then differentiate based on UMAT and interview.

In answer to the original question: the uni you end up getting into is the best uni for med.

USyd Medicine is post-graduate, i.e. complete a degree then sit the GAMSAT. However there are a handful of school leavers (99.95) that get in. Prestige means shit all in medicine - same qualifications, however if it floats your boat then choose UNSW.

Not really. It depends on whether you want to study at one institution than the other; factors such as friends, finance and convenience could see this statement disproved.

basically a handful (20 or so) of students who get 99.95 can get into the USYD provisional entry scheme. u do a 3 year bachelors course in your choice (music, arts, science etc) and then straight into a 4 year MBBS degree. obviously more than 20 students with 99.95 apply so they then rank the applicants based on UMAT score, the interview is just a formality really.
the program differs from the conventional postgrad in that you dont need to sit the GAMSAT and undergo another interview.

nah UWS and UNCLE/UNE are still targetted at undergraduates since the vast majority of their students are undergrad. they just have different course models. UWS is similar to the monash undergrad stream with the 2 years preclinical and 3 years clinical.

tsunami? pretty much, in the past decade, many med schools have been established (UWS, ANU, deakin et al) and many med schools have dramatically increased their intake in order to fulfill the doctor shortage. it was a very short sighted view by the government who thought that more med schools=more doctors which is only the case to an extent.

they are pumping out so many graduates now that its almost impossible for the system to offer them all training spots so what you will end up with is a bottle neck where hundreds of junior doctors have to join a long queue for training places into the various specialties. theres now even the problem where graduates have trouble finding internships (1st year out of uni). the problem will only get worse. there are a few states in particular where the problem is already emerging.
