the rank of the school itself has nothing to do with atar, its just a useful way of getting estimates because it puts things into perspective. 1/30 at a 30th ranked school is better than 1/30 at 200th rank school.

Any school rank you see is irrelevant to you as it would be based on the results of a previous cohort of your school. After your cohort does the HSC there will be a new list of ranks done based on your cohort's results, which next year's cohort at your school can use as a guide to how the school currently ranks.

This is exactly how I would have put it. However, what cem said is also true, as school ranks can fluctuate quite a bit from year to year.
