I know we're not supposed to depend on scaling but out of curiosity which subjects scale best?

Can anyone order business studies, legal studies, studies of religion II, standard english and general mathematics in terms of their scaling?

Thanks in advance :)

This is a rough idea of there scaling

Standard
Legal
Business
SOR II
General

With standard, whilst it scales really well it aligns poorly. So less than 5% of students get above a band 5, with only 64/30,000 students getting above band 6. Also, the middle three have very similar scaling. I'm not to sure on the way I ranked the mid three however, maybe someone could provide you with a more accurate idea (shadowdude maybe).

If you were middle of the state in all those, it'd go something like: SORII, Legal, Business, General Maths, Std. English.

no, scaling tends to affect the lower percentiles in most subjects

so it would be the subject you do worst in
the original question said "which one scales the best", which implies for me which subject will scale down by the least or scale me up by the most, and like you said scaling generally effcts the lower percentiles and to stay out if them you need to get the best mark possible, like i said
thus, generally speaking the better you do in a sibject, the "better" scaling is for the individual in question

right?

Okay I'm going to sound really stupid but... what's the difference between scaling and aligning?
Basically, scaling occurs when the UAC is calculating your ATAR (not sure of the minutae of this process). Aligning occurs when the BOS changes your raw external marks into your final external marks (for example, a raw external mark of 75/100 in chemistry might get aligned up to a final external mark of 90/100).

Dont worry about it being a studpid question - I didnt even know that your raw external marks were aligned until a few weeks before the HSC (I thought if you get 90 for an exam mark, that meant you got a raw mark of 90% in the exam).

aligning is done by the board of studies to determine the hsc mark on your hsc report

they are really generous and pretty much give everyone above 50% even if they get 10% raw

uac (the evil fucks who determine your atar) realise that the board of studies are shits so scale the marks accordingly
