im struggling to answer Q.29)d)iii) from the 2006 HSC exam, can someone please help me?? Here it is:

Visual neglect is a type of brain damage where the information collated on one half of the brain is rejected. The sufferer can only operate with one eye because the part of the brain recieveing visual information from the other eye is not functioning properly. In some cases, sufferers may only be able to paint half a painting or eat one half of a plate of food as they are unaware of the information about the other half of the environment.

Explain the role of the brain in the coordination of animal behavior. (4 marks)

The brain is the centre of coordination of human behaviour.
This is because of the stimulus-response pathway. The brain the centre of this pathway and determines whether the stimulus is observed or reacted to.
Therefore, the brain coordinates the animal's response to the environment and their behaviour.
An example of this is given above, where a direct impairment to the brain is coordinating the animal to only see half of it's environment and only interact with that half.
Another example of this is shown when lesions in the temporal and parietal lobes damage wernicke's area, causing wernicke's aphasia. This inhibits the human understanding of spoken and written words and coordinates their behaviour by allowing them to only react to speech through disordered language.
Therefore, the brain coordinates all animal behaviour as it is the centre of the stimulus-response pathway and hence when damaged the animal cannot function or react properly to its environment.

That's just what I would write.

The answer in my successOne book is:
The brain is responsible for the coordination of animal behaviour. It is made up of cerebrum, cerebellum and brain stem. Together these parts of the brain receive information about stimuli from the receptors an initiate responses by the effector organs. Given the amount of stimulus being received by an organism at any one time, it follows that the information needs to be coordinated in order for the messages not to get lost or mixed up. The cerebral hemispheres are clearly divided into regions with different responsibilities for each type of stimulus, and a series of nerves connect the brain with the sense organs and the relevant effector organs. The incoming message being receive along the sensory neurones does not overlap with the outgoing message travelling along the motor neurones, ensuring an effective stimulus response pathway.

I don't like it compared to mine, but I probably should've explored the stimulus-response pathway more. :/

I believe you explain how sensory signals must be intepreted blah blah. - ellaborate on how it enables them to distinguish through coloured vision behaviour courtships, etc, etc.


Im just guessing. I find communication quite difficult. Although i know 80% of it. I just need to smash the brain crap over the next 2 weeks.
