Residential Colleges (1 Viewer)

I've tried on a number of forum sites but never get many replies.

I'm 2nd year at unimelb. i live at home in melbourne. lets just say that i can go to University College and im guaranteed a place. What's it like there? (if you know) are there any local metropolitan students there or all just rural? coz i kinda want to socialise with a mix and not just rural or interstate people.

What are your views of newman college too? It seems that the melbourne catholic school students go there.

Hey,
University college is sweet. Any college you go to will be a huge amount of fun. It's definitely a great experience. I'll give my quick view on the colleges; I went to Queens:
UC, Mary's, Queens and Hildas: All pretty much the same, except Queens is a bit bigger. I know they try and keep the metro:rural ratio fairly similar, so there is a good mix of kids. There also tends to be a mix of people - there are groups that study a lot, groups that study just enough to pass, groups that always seem to party, and those that are only around for a semester because they are idiots/fail every subject. Hilda's has a rep as a "party college", and i know they have some pretty big party days, but my brother is there and he said it doesnt really interfere with study.
Newman: Probably the most christian moraled college there. They mave mass every week. You hear funny rumours about that too - that they have to keep there door open when there is the opposite sex in the room, and that they are only allowed to drink at specified events. I'm not sure if they're true, i don't know anyone that goes there.
Trinity: The most expensive college (and the admin likes to show it). They have the rep of being full of rich snobs, but everyone i've met from there is really nice.
Ormond: A real mix of people. Their college looks like it's from harry potter, and all the people i've met are wannabe business students. I've only met a few, so don't take my word as gospel.
Whitley: It's a donut shaped building that is off campus, but it sounds like good fun. It was a dry college for a little while, but they repealed that, so its ok.
International House: Takes a high number of international students; very focussed on study.
JCH: I know very little about. It seems like a sister college of ormond.
Medley: I have never met anyone from medley, or heard of anyone from medley. I can give no info.

Seeing as you are from Queen's could you give me a rundown on college life there? What's it like academically, socially? What kind of students do you get?

I was torn between Queen's and Trinity but I'm inclined to put Queen's as my first preference because Trinity looks to formal. I'm looking for something a little more laid back with nice kids and sweet parties. Queen's seems like it has a more relaxed atmosphere to it than the other few larger colleges.

Also, just out of curiosity, which college tends to attract which type of kid (hipster kids, sporty types, private school students ... that kind of thing)?

Hey My sis went to melbourne and i know a few friends who go there.
she went to hildas - bit of a 'party' college very relaxed lots of country kids go there (apparently) but some of her friends were from melbs it has air conditioning and lots of facilities like types of common rooms and assembally hall and gym and runs tuts on the college has a really friendly 'feel' - my sis got loads of distinctions and HDs so wont interfer with study

trinity is a bit 'clicky' I know last years private school dux/school captian goes there, she is very accademically orientated apparently they have groups and like the international people sit together and the other gorups all have their own tables . BTW has a good music program

queens again looks like a castle - has no air conditioning - big mix of people i think

i know private school kids go to all the collages so it wont be much of a difference
