It's not time consuming ringing the BOS, it takes an average of about 3-4 minutes.

Yes there is. You need to answer the secret question you made though in order to retrieve your PIN. Some BOSer forgot his PIN and I told him to go retrieve it from the Students Online site. But he/she forgot the answer to his/her secret question as well. Many lulz were had.

Personally, I don't see why you need to change your initial PIN from the letter. It just creates the possibility of forgetting your new PIN, rather than the one given.
