Just saw an advert for this on tv and it looks good for Australia's first hatch designed and built in Australia. Not my cup of tea for style but it does look modern at least.

Looks pretty good value- I'm surprised about the comment that the price difference between engines is minimal:

Around the hilly outskirts of Adelaide we found the 1.8-litre ECOTEC petrol struggling, despite its 104kW and 176Nm of torque. It’s actually rather reasonable when driven around town but given the price difference to jump up to a 1.4-litre turbo is a mere $1250, you’d have to be mad not to upgrade (but given 40 per cent of Cruze sedans sold so far are powered by the 1.8-litre engine, there’s a lot of buyers out there that buy on price alone).

the SRI-v looks nice but it's the expensive version of the cruise. The other one (CD) which is the standard model looks so chat it's not funny

I prefer the look of the sedan actually, it'd be on my shortlist at that pricerange though easily.

I'd really love to give that 1.4 Turbo a thrash, see what you can get out of it.

why

edit: there is no logic in only purchasing vehicles based purely on the type of fuel they use, its pretty stupid

Small things, I don't like the way they don't rev to the heavens, I don't like the relatively small powerband and I don't like the smell.

I haven't driven a modern diesel car but I've heard that a lot of issues with smell are now non-existent.

we have a turbo diesel passat
least harsh engine i have heard in a car its size
amazing power and torque. no smell (ive owned a couple hiluxes and a landcruiser i know the smell lol) and ridiculous fuel consumption

Agreed the powerband can be limiting since 5,000rpm isn't enough for racing purposes but for daily driving it's perfect since it's enough guts to overtake. I'll take you for a spin in my car at the next meet- it's not as brutal as the Evo when it was tuned (which had similar torque but obviously much higher power) but it's still good. Diesel engines are surprisingly good but they require a bit more effort for maintenance re: cleaning the particulate filter.

Yeah, I like really small underpowered cars like the Mazda 2 since you can rev the nuts off them and still not break any traffic laws. I dunno, I just find that fun.

Also helps that the Mazda2 is both lightweight and has a not too bad chassis. That being said people rate the new Kia Rio chassis which is also in this price bracket so I'd put that into the mix for the other thread.
