550D was the first camera I got from last year christmas in a twin lens kit. Installed magic lantern and it's a beast!

Since then I've bought a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 prime and couldn't be happier

Only downside to the 550D was how light it was, it got outbalanced by most lens. Put a battery grip and it's all good now

Next step:
24-105mm f/4L

Here's my album if y'all are interested:

I meant more technical specs (ISO, etc). How would I apply the rule of thirds to the city photo?

ISO helps to capture different levels of light - so does the shutter speed.

In the brightest situations you will set ISO as low as you can (100) and have the shutter speed quite fast so you don't over expose the picture with light. Pictures get really grainy at and above 6400 ISO though (or at least in most situations), but the newest cameras handle it well.

If you're in the city, ISO 400 with a normal shutter speed will capture great quality. Just depends on the light.

I keep forgetting, does a lower f stop mean pics are brighter or dimmer?

The lower the f stop number the higher the aperture meaning brighter, also more depth of field.

Love my D300 - it's a great camera to use... shame it's starting to get some weird bugs - must be time to move on.

Shallower depth of field for a lower f-stop.
