This ain't a maff problem. Though Math Man sneakily didn't claim it to be a maff problem. You had me fooled with "programmers" that it was something to do with binary.

I give up, how do you do it.
The pattern is not even limited to numbers.

Consider the word "pattern".

According to the puzzle, pattern = 3

However, its upper case version PATTERN = 3, but for a slightly different reason.

Consider 'math man'. Again using the pattern, we see that math man = 2.

ted = 2 whereas TED = 1

troll = 1 whereas TROLL = 2
