Hey guys i had my second FINS1613 lecture today. To sum everything up. I was mega mindfkd - i could barely keep up with what was going on. the american lecturer guy talks pretty fast and i found it extremely hard to keep up with new concepts/definitions and even newer stuff which were built on the new concepts/definitions which i was still trying to understand. ---> and honestly if i asked questions when i didn't understand something, i would ask a question every 2 or so minutes especially because of all this jargon i wasn't familiar with (plus i did business studies in hsc and did reasonably well).

im a first year undergraduate and am not a study freak - i got high 80's atar. THEREFORE is it NORMAL for someone like me to be that lost? i AM still quite a newbie at living life as a uni student.

Also I was wondering if its still possible for me to pass this course if i did decent study. as in revision/practice at like once every two nights?
if someone can let me know if i should soldier through the course or rage quit that would be nice... or even give some support. lol im just pretty stressed/scared atm. so yeah.
Thanks peeps - I was thinking of dropping but i guess i can try to do my best and being happy even if i fail...

Read the text book
Do your Tut problems
you'll be fine.
Theres probably some PASS classes starting week 3 which can help you, so attend them if your stuck.

your not expected to understand everything straight out from the lecture anyways. If you do then great but most of us have to go away and take time to absorb all that info

Uni is really fast paced. In high school you usually get a week to study a topic and really move on to the next topic when you have the firm grasp of the previous one.

At uni the time to 'consolidate' you knowledge is usally after week 10-study period. It's quite normal for me to be really disorganised and lost until then.

don't worry bro we were all mega lost during fins1613 lectures . our lecturer was spanish or something with a ridiculously hard accent to understand.

however, make sure you do the homework, pay attention in the tutes and be up to date on a weekly basis

Aiite thanks guys! I'll stick to it and do my best then. (eventhough im on hecs i still cant not think about the money thatll be lost if i DO fail)

What I've noticed with finance especially is i try to get my head around something but then something new based on that is suddenly being taught already!!! i was deadset just scratching my head for half of the lecture ><"
so many large chunks of new info and jargon mannn omg.

---> plus some guys in the lecture were like sleeping and when given some of the questions, he did them all like straight away... i was like WTFFF :angryfire: that scared me even more haha

btw whatsup with the PASS classes? how do i find out when those classes are on for FINS1613 and what basically happens? i think i should attend

unfortunately fins1613 is one of those commerce courses without a pass class. What you could do is attend a consultation time and ask the tutor/lecturer (whoever is responsible for that consultation time) to calrify concepts with you. Most of the time they be happy to answer questions as at this time they are suppose to help students but no one turns up so they end up sitting there for like hours doing nothing.

Something that lots of first years have problems with is the transition from high school learning to uni. At uni lectures are not your normal high school classes. Treat lectures as a rather simple over view of what you will need to learn for that week. The lecturer will only go through the materials briefly. You will need to go through the textbook for detailed reading and understanding. Then if you still dont understand ask your tutor(tutorials are designed to ask questions) or go to a consultation time.

I did fins1613 last sem, I didn't havev problem understandng the Vietnamese lecturer (the one shadowdude was referring to) but I did have problems understanding what Gloira(lecture for 2nd half) with some of her materials. What I did was read the textbook and when I still didnt understand I went to see my tutor during consultation time. Trust me it works. This is what I did and got a high HD for the course. I am not boasting my marks but I am just saying the method I did worked.

Also if you feel uneasy to ask your tutor or something, you could contact me and I will try and explain some of the concepts to you. I can be contacted via my email, Michael.tran92@live.com.

Good luck with 1st year!

I found 1613 to be daunting too and didn't do as well as I did in 1612 (which was a piece of cake in comparison). Don't fret too much because whilst it's tough at first, try to put some time into doing your readings. You know you're at a slight disadvantage but it doesn't mean you can't catch up. It's also worth really trying to get a grasp of the concepts because quite a few of the things taught in 1613 (e.g. WACC) come back in many other areas of Commerce both in uni and in practice... and even in post grad (e.g. CA).

LOL yeah that guy! IMO he talks like everyone is as advanced as himself. but then again like other people are saying, i guess all lecturers kinda do that... but for me its just with finance in particular.

plz, FINS1613 is such an easy subject.

It's like your second lecture, which from memory is valuation of cash flows (just getting to know how to use the annuity formulas and what not. It's really not that hard.)
