Opps, i completely miss read this forum! not for mathematics extension 2, just plain 2 unit mathematics.

you need complex numbers, Maths extension 2 so dont worry about it.

Today I asked my teacher a question out of our maths textbook and he refused to do it because according to him it was way too complicated for HSC. He says that the HSC has simplish questions.
Can somebody tell me if thats true?
I don't know how to start a new thread otherwise I would've.

haha, what was the question and which textbook was it from?
some textbook questions can be unreasonable, and it depends what you're talking about
adv maths has simplish questions, but then again; so do most 2u textbooks

Guys, how did you get the answer to a^4 + 4b^4 (please show full working)
You can write a^4 + 4b^4 as:
a^4 + 4a^2b^2 + 4b^4 - 4a^2b^2 =

(a^2 + 2b^2)^2 - (2ab)^2 after completing the square and rearranging as a difference of two squares.

now using the difference of two squares, we can factorise it to:

(a^2 + 2b^2 + 2ab) (a^2 + 2b^2 - 2ab)

rearranging the terms would result in the answer (a^2 + 2ab + 2b^2) (a^2 - 2ab + 2b^2)

If you're referring to the a^4 + 4b^4 , I believe that those types of questions are in the Extension part of chapter 1 in the Year 11 Cambridge 3 Unit Mathematics textbook.
