Yeah. What happened is that I walked into my lecture theatre, saw a girl in a purple dress - thought "Holy crap that looks familiar", went closer and I recognised her. Turns out that that girl was the person I sat next to on the train, but I didn't talk to her at all on the train (she had headphones, iirc). And somehow we had the same English lecture! She's my lecture buddy now.

I think everyone has to admit - it's a pretty awesome and co-incidental chain of events.

Start off with a "Hey" follow it up with a convo such as,
"Is this your first year?"
"Which subjects are you doing?"
"Where do you live?" (might want to wait a bit for this one - depends on how it's going).
"How're you finding it?"
"This lecturer sure is terrible isn't he (she)"

etc... once you get it started just continue it and after the first time it'll make it a lot less awkward and you wont even realise that you're making total random conversations without even trying (like you do normally with your friends).

If they're not weird/rude they'll introduce them self, and depending on where you are, you can ask them a question.
I.E. If you're on a train, "where are you going?
If they're reading a book, "what are you reading?"

and if you can't think of anything, asking how they are usually does it
