i think tutors are good if you lack motivation..
i lacked motivation and even though I knew I had the a ability to study by myself, the tutor provided me with a reason to put in the effort.
My tutor also helped me by accelerating through the syllabus, which made classes at school just revision.

I had a tutor for mx2 and chem.

private and fresh, young tutors. they'll still remain enthusiastic and retain a lot of the content learned. marks do reflect attitude and knowledge, so use them as an indicator

I very strongly disagree with you.

1. The vast majority of high-school graduates offering tutoring are those who want some easy money. It's a sad fact that we can't deny.

2. I know MANY MANY people who did well in subjects (especially Mathematics), but did not really have a positive attitude towards it. Largely because of tutoring.

3. How much you retain is largely dependent on how much you understood the content and how much you actually enjoyed studying it, not just based on X weeks from graduation.
