10K may seem like a lot to you now although in the future it won't. It is hard to live on a 30K scholarship even.

Ahh yeah, my cousin lives in the mountains, went to a private school there and (i'm pretty sure) got EAS, a scholarship and a centrelink benefit.

In the grand scheme of things it's not much, but it certainly makes a big difference, especially if you're not from an afluent family. Also, I don't think anyone tries to live solely off their scholarship.

There are others he/she could get.

I'm on a scholarship. Well, not really - it's called the UNSW Academic Achievement Award. Apparently it's good enough for a ticket to the Scholarships lunch.

lots of pretty girls there

but i was socially inept last year so... didn't have the guts to talk to them :(
I want dat AAA Scholarship, do you just have to be the highest ATAR from your school applying at UNSW?

Don't think so. But ask the uni.

Yes but... these are undergrad scholarships, so it's just additional money that you get. FREE MONEY!

Well, expected to get the highest ATAR.

It was between me and this girl at my school, but as her first three preferences were USyd USyd USyd and mine were USyd USyd UNSW - I got it because I had a UNSW preference.

If you get youth allowance/aus study/abstudy though or similar from the government you would lose that instead if you got a scholarship. So it wouldn't be as big of a financial advantage as you think.

meh, no one minds an advantage for themselves.

you don't lose it. You get a decrease in payment once you get over 7750~ in scholarship payments yearly. So it is a big financial advantage.

I am hoping for atar between 92-93 and I want to do Mechanical Engineering. My first preference is UNSW, then UsyD and then UOW. What scholarships are available? Thanks :)

How much does the GOvernment pay through HECS?
they dont pay, they just give you a nominal tax free loan(adjusted for inflation), which they deduct from your salary after you start earning over a certain figure, not sure of the exact figure.

AAA scholarship. $4000 gift for the first year, payable to the highest expected atar receiver with UNSW preference 1. There is the co-op scholarship for engineering, $16750 per year with 10wk industry training at the end of each year and a year of training after 3rd year. There is also a plethora (20+) rural scholarships for various branches of engineering which are $10000-$10500 per year.
