hi there!
i'm currently in the process of selecting subjects for y11~y12.
I'm thinking of..

- English ESL
- Math ext 1
- photography (non-atar 1unit course - for making 12 units : i have to drop this subject in year12)
- Business OR Economic
- Design Technology(home economic) OR Visual Art
- Japanese continuer
- TAFE Tvet Financial Service (Accounting)

i have total 14 units for year11, but after 4weeks of term1 in year11, I can drop either TAFE accounting course or one 2 units school subject.
So after 4 weeks, i will drop 'Business OR Economic' or japanese if i like to do accounting TAFE course, so that i can do 12 units in year11 with one major work subject(DT or Visual art) and TAFE accounting course.

so the question is... Business or Economic!!!

a) which is better? (for example, in terms of scaling/how hard/relation with accounting course.....etc) - i'm aiming for atar 95+

b) after 4weeks, i have to drop either accounting or one school subject. so if i like to do accounting, then what do i hav to drop among Bus/Eco/Jap?

I would suggest dropping Japanese.

If you're heading for an Accounting degree like B.Commerce (Accounting Major) on the tertiary level, doing HSC Business Studies (You learn few basic accounting mechanics) and doing HSC Economics could help a bit, doing both would give you a huge advantage also. I know for First year subjects you would learn Micro and Macro Economics and also Business Management which are slightly based on these HSC subjects so they could save you some time and effort.

Likewise, I advise doing both Business and Economics for the HSC as some of the contents overlap and have an interrelation (For example Globalization, Employment Relations and etc). So doing both is good in comparison to Japanese.

Business Studies is not a very good scaling subject and Economics is a quite good one, but again, if you're aiming for 95 ATAR then you would probably work very hard throughout the year and Scaling should be irrelevant.

I hope this helps!

thank u for advice:)!
i just changed my mind to do [bus+eco+visual art+accounting] and then drop bus or eco after 4 weeks.

actually.. i was worried about business scales lower than japanese continuer, but i dont think jap can be useful in my future..
I do like studying it but other reasons were that i've easily got high mark in our school japanese beginner tests in y10 (our jap teacher's giving us an easy test..!)
and my mom can help japanese a lot (cuz she had studied in japan..)

If you had to pick one of them, i would strongly recommend economics. I do both at the moment, and find the business content a bit dry sometimes, and i'm not the only one. In comparison, eco is much more interesting and gives you a greater understanding of how the whole economy works, and not just how a business works.

However, if you want to do a commerce degree in the future, i think you should do both. They slightly overlap and if your motivated, you should be able to get a band 6 in business easy, eco is harder but of course scales better.

I guarantee to you, scaling will not affect your ATAR drastically. There is nothing to fear about it. Subject combination is Arbitrary and no subject will drag your ATAR down accordingly.

As for Japanese versus your other subjects, if you feel that you enjoy it and you have the confidence to do well and again with advantageous resources such as your mother, then it could be more suitable.

But as for an Accounting degree, I think Economics+Accounting HSC and Business Studies is really the trinity that will be really helpful and could save some stress when you hit University.

That being said also, Economics is the hardest out of the three subjects. It scales way higher though, from personal experience Business Studies was very straightforward and success is way easier. It was a matter of mastering the syllabus and notes (Theoratical) and then applying it practically or thinking in the logic of a business Manager or Consultant.

Drifting95 had a very good point, Business Studies focuses solely on the Business context whilst Economics is very multi-faceted and could be much more difficult. It discuses different industries, markets, consumers, individuals, businesses and the government in a wider context. Also, there is a lot of graphing, calculating trends and statistics and also researching involved in Economics.

Do business studies at all cost and then choose wether or not you will do economics, Economics is the physics of humanities. Its not nice.
