Regardless of how serious they are about following through, it's a pretty big deal that the *UK* of all places would consider/threaten that.

Also wannaspoon, firstly, no I don't and you've answered your own question. He is hiding out there because there is a chance he would be extradited to USA for espionage, when he merely provided a host for other peoples leaks.

Why does your judgement of him as a person even matter? Especially considering all you know of him and his persona has been shaped and rorted by the media.

If Sweden and the US offered a guarantee that he would not be extradited to the US, then I would probably be critical of him for hiding in the embassy. They have been asked to provide such guarantees on several occasions by both the Ecuadorian government and Assange. On each occasion they have blatantly refused. The Swedish government was offered the opportunity to interview Assange at the embassy and this offer was also refused. An offer was made by Assange to stand trial via video link and this offer was refused.

So then, why is the UK government willing to take the extreme step of stripping an embassy of its status (something that is virtually without modern precedent) and incur the risk of breaching the Vienna Convention to apprehend a man who has not been charged with any crimes?

Imagine the consequences this would have on embassies around the world. The next time somebody seeks refuge in a UK (or any) embassy, the government in the relevant country can strip the embassy of its status and use this case as an example. This would basically destroy the protection historically offered under embassies, which was even respected in the Cold War.

what if they ship 50kg of ecuadorian soil/ground to the embassy, put it in a cart, and then get him to sit in the cart, and use that to transport him to an embassy car, and then go to the airport and send him off. Does that work or?

But he's not on british soil.

If they wanted to be really cautious, I guess they could put him in a huge box with holes labelled 'diplomatic bag' and then put the bag ON the cart with Ecuadorian soil, and then load that on an embassy car.

Too easy :p

q. why ecuador?
Probably because the president expressed sympathy towards Assange previously. Assange had the chance to interview him and it seemed like they were getting on pretty well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvUwC5JTAJY

A diplomatic bag (or crate) is only supposed to be used for "official use". With the increased police scrutiny, it would be unlikely that the police would not catch wind of such an attempt. If a diplomatic bag is suspected as being used in a capacity which is not "official", then the police would probably be within their rights to search it.

Although there is the 1964 incident of Dohan who was kidnapped and thrown into a diplomatic crate. It didn't end very well.

An embassy isn't in itself sovereign. In other words, it would be incorrect to say it is technically Ecuadorian soil. It's just that the embassy gets immunity and is therefore not bound by local laws.

It is sad that this man has done the right thing but is being punished because he simply revealed others wrongdoing. Everyone knows it but I needed to say it.

the US has enjoyed uncontrolled power for far to long, ruining the world in its wake. Its people are slaves to a war machine and the war machine is a slave to its people. Remove its arms, battle its troops and squash their world wide terrorism.

Do they even have the audacity to say that there aren't obvious (no pun intended) ulterior motives involved here?

I highly doubt the "rape" case against him is that strong.

Interesting commentary:

Both women boasted of their of their respective celebrity conquests on internet posts and mobile phones texts after the intimacy they would now see him destroyed for.

Ardin hosted a party in Assange’s honour at her flat after the ‘crime’ and tweeted to her followers that she was with the “the world's coolest smartest people, it's amazing!”

Ardin has sought unsuccessfully to delete these and thereby destroy evidence of Assange’s innocence She has published on the internet a guide on how to get revenge on cheating boyfriends.

Their sms texts to each other show a plan to contact the Swedish newspaper Expressen before hand in order to maximise the damage to Assange.

They belong to the same political group and attended a public lecture given by Assange and organised by them.

The exact content of Sophia Wilén’s mobile phone texts is not yet known but their bragging and generally positive content about Assange has been confirmed by Swedish prosecutors.

The consent of both women to sex with Assange has been confirmed by prosecutors. Niether Wilén’s nor Ardin’s texts complain of rape.

These facts should make any normal prosecutor gravely concerned about whether a false complaint is being made.

But then neither Arden nor Wilén complained to the police. They collaboratively ‘sought advice’, a technique in Sweden enabling citizens to avoid being sued for making false complaints

In any normal first world country the prosecutor would know that her case not just a deeply flawed waste of time by a dangerous perversion of the serious objectives of rape laws.
