Hey Guys, Just wondering if you come first in the externals but your internal rank is not first, then does that mean that you don't keep the mark you get for the externals?

You keep your external mark component no matter what. The actual HSC mark itself is 50% internal and 50% external though. The 50% internal is calculated from your ranks, the relative gap between ranks, and the the cohorts external marks. Well except for first and last, rank 1's internal mark is equal to the highest external mark and the lowest ranked persons internal mark is equal to the lowest external mark.

So If Im second for example in Chemistry but I get the top mark in the external, i still get to keep it?

Yes, you ALWAYS keep your external mark.
+1.

If you top the externals, it doesn't neccesarily mean you will have the highest HSC mark for chemistry though. If the person ranked first internally comes second in externals then both of you will get the exact same mark. You will have their external mark for your internal, and they will have your external mark as their internal so when averaged out both of your hsc marks will be the same. Around this time of the year people might began to worry about "stealing marks" and stuff but that's stupid - everyone knew internal assesments mattered from the start of year 12. Don't worry about this stuff, it's a very fair system and people are only badly disadvantaged in special and rare cases.

What about the case of like rank 13/50 internals but you top externals? where the terrible internal rank is due to biased marking

The internal mark will be a whole lot lower than the external component. Going to be honest here, no matter what your rank, as long as you get the best external mark you can possibly get/are happy with it then it's better if other students in your grade do better externally. Will only help your ATAR/marks...
