How are marks actually calculated? (1 Viewer)

Hey guys,
I was wondering how Band 6's and the like are actually calculated?
Like, do they take your raw mark from the HSC exam and then find out your mark with your internal score, or do they scale the raw mark first?
Do you actually have to achieve 90% in your HSC exam to attain a band 6? (my internal mark for English for example was 93).

Also, how do ranks actually affect you if you're not coming first in a class, but say you are coming second or third?

They set benchmarks by examining the paper.

They take into consideration the difficulty of the paper and see, a band 6 student should get at least 75/100 raw mark for this exam and set that as the cut-off.

Oh okay, cause sometimes I go on ATAR calculator and if I put in 75 for instance, it is scaled down... but I guess I just don't get the system lol

you're meant to put your HSC marks into the ATAR Calculator... not raw...

basically:
raw --> aligned = External
your overall % relative to everyone else in the grade --> moderated = Internal

HSC Mark: (Internal + External)/2

once you have obtained your 'HSC Mark' you can put it into the ATAR Calculator
