I reckon its to boost your desire to achieve well... in the psychology of many people.. a materialistic incentive will give them the will to endeavour through a task

My mums taken my laptop, car, piano, tv out of my room since I got my result. I got into my course but my ATAR was way too low. I've been told by both mum and dad that I'm not allowed to go out, books and my phone ( which I hid) are all I have for entertainment, lol..
