Hey guys,
As you know, tonight is the deadline for late round offers (in terms of modifying your course preference at least). Before in the main rounds, I got offered (and which I accepted) a Bachelor of Commerce/Applied Finance at Macquarie Uni.

Now, my atar is 87.25.

Checking the vacancies list, I can maybe still make usyd arts (81) or uts business (90). Both courses I will need to transition in as I want to end up doing commerce or economics at unsw or usyd (employability, ranking of uni in the subject etc). Also, UTS business is only a part time course (no more vacancies for full time) while arts...is arts. Which means I will at least have to 'waste' half a year before I can apply to transfer.

Now my questions are:

1/ Is UTS business > Macq commmerce/applied finance? Does having a shorter travelling time period mean I would do better?

2/ If I do transfer externally from Macq, can I start at usyd/unsw next year as a second year student as I will have done first year commerce at Macq? Similarly, if I chose subjects from the economic faculty at usyd, does it mean I can not start from scratch?

3/ Are there any other options I have overlooked? I got an email from usyd saying that I could do resource economics or agricultural economics. Are they similar degrees to just economics?

4/I just rang up UTS and they said I had a higher chance if I put B Business as my first preference? Is that true? I thought my course offers were decided on an ATAR basis rather than my course preferences.

Thanks guys!

P.S. Its okay if you only answer 1-2 out of my 4 questions. ANYTHING is welcomed at this point.

That doesn't neccesariy mean no offers will be made in the late round. Additionally there was a student doing part time business at UTS on here a week or so ago who reckoned he could enrol in a full load (4 subjects).

As for transferring, it depends on whether the uni recognises the subjects and can credit you for them. I cant remember if it was Usyd or UNSW but one of them has a list on the site of subjects you can recieve credit for from other unis. If you are definitely transferring you will probably want to select your subjects in a way that they will all be recognised even if it's not the suggested subjects for first year.

As for what UTS told you, afaik they are bending the truth somewhat as offers are allocated from ATARs. You do have a higher chance of getting B Business if you have it as your first preference - but that is because you might get an offer for an earlier preference.

I just want to do something in business as I don't do any good at the sciences and aren't much of an english student either.

Have you looked through the list of majors available and found anything of fancy? Anything you definitely don't want to do?

Nupe.

I don't want to do anything that makes you leave the city though (so, no offence, but something like agricultural economics isn't for me).

In my opinion UTS and Macq are the same in terms of business. Macq maybe slightly more prestigious as it is ranked higher. How travelling affects your marks really depends on you, would you be willing to wake up early in the morning, travel for 2 hours to get to a 9 am lecture?

From what i've heard, MQ Commerce > UTS Business but MQ requires some travel. Im actually in a similar situation to you as Im doin one year of Commerce majoring in Accounting at MQ then looking for a transfer to UNSW which i need 70-75 minimum WAM (asked them). But u should seriously go UTS or MQ whichever is closer to you , get good marks and transfer. If u go MQ Commerce we might be in the same class lol :)
