What course should i do at uni (1 Viewer)

hey

im graduating school this year, and i've been told i should know what i want to do next year or narrow it down at least.

i want to go to uni straight away (preferably unsw) but i'm not too sure what course

the subjects im doing are:
MX1, MX2, Physics, Economics and Advanced English
and am doing really well in them all

does anyone have any suggestions on what couse i should be looking at? or at least a faculty?

i want a degree in which graduates are in high demand of, so i get a good salary.

at school i enjoy maths and economics, so maybe that direction?

Okay then, make sure it is what you actually want to do. Often I see lots of people not happy with the course they have chosen. You have the whole year (almost) so do some extensive research. =-)

You said going through med would be a drag. Well, actuarial studies isn't as easy either as after the degree (4 years of uni for parts I and II) you need 3 years of work experience (many people don't even get jobs as actuaries and need to go into insurance or something else and earning probably average-above average pay) + studying before you can even apply to become a fully accredited actuary. Many people don't even pass the exams on their first try also.

Thus it'd take you about 7+ years AT LEAST, about the same as a med degree.

For the adv maths component of that degree you'll have to take a compulsory honours year. If you don't want to do that you'll have to change the sci(adv maths) degree to a regular sci degree (which doesn't neccesarily offer the same majors in terms of specialisation).

Hahah, i didn't want to dissuade you from actuarial studies, just providing with some information on things you mightn't know. From what i've seen in my textbooks (i'm only a first year so take everything i say with a grain of salt haha) actuarial studies is a mix of finance, eco and maths, so if you're interested in those then i'd definitely consider it.

Lol i chose actuarial studies/eco at UNSW. But i know your mindset now, like you don't want to waste a year right? I reckon you shouldn't care too much about that and just go the course that seems most appealing to you. If you end up not using some subjects for your degree or transferring then it really doesn't matter too much. (as long as you have more of an idea of where you wanna head into)

Umm yeh. In fact, from what i've heard, most people undertaking a phd usually do an honours year.
