Aren't they both soluble though.
According to Wiki Magnesium hydroxide has a solubility in water of 0.0014 g/100 mL. So very little, but it still is soluble to some degree isn't it?

Calcium carbonate is supposed to be insoluble too- but lookat wikipedia- they have near exact same solubility. Lookat the water module in ur textbook and search for solubility =)

According to my book- if u have less than 1g/L it's defined as insoluble- CCPC

Mg(OH)2 is considered INSOLUBLE. The other one is soluble (contains Na+), and thus, dissolving in water, filtration and evaporation should do it.
