i think the title should be changed from 'is australia racist' to 'are some asutralian's racist', this is a massive generalisation. also if you dont like it, why not go somewhere else? why should australian's change to please you? not being racist but its a legitimate question. if i dont like something i dont stay in that situation and then complain about it, i leave. think of it like this: i visit someones home, he invites me in but is a real jerk to me, callling me names etc. do i stay and whine about how bad it is and feel sorry for myself or do i get out of there???

What if I dislike Australia, but I dislike everywhere else even more? What if my friend is a jerk, but the alternative accomodation is a gulag.

It seems like objectively this is one of the best country, but it's really just the best by meeting bare minimum standards of decency, everywhere else in the world is so bad that mediocrity looks appealing.

well then dont complain, and be greatful that youre in australia. i find it hard to believe that out of the 200+ countries, Australia is the best suited for your circumstances. 'Bare minimum standards', 'mediocrity looks appealing', you have gotta be kidding! you cant complain about something that doesn't exist, in this case, a country free of racism.

I think what a lot of foreigners find intimidating is the way Australian's talk to each other and interact. For example, there were these awesome Asian blokes in a few of my classes who copped some shit (jokingly, of course) about being Asian, such as: sweat shop worker, rice field workers, parents getting angry about them not getting 100%. They laughed at it and knew we (our school was 90% anglo) were only joking. they gave shit back to us and we gave it back to them. everyone in our year loved them... why? because instead of being butt hurt and pulling the racist card all the time, they joined in on the joke and gave some back. Australians like people who like a joke and a fun time.

Of course, this is different from an aussie yelling at someone of a particular race out of the blue. I just think that racism these days is grossly exaggerated.

It sounds like your high school friends assimilated well. If only all immigrants were as successful at doing so...

A more meaningful question would be, is australia any more racist than most other countries? Because I would contend that they're less racist.
Agreed. I dare say we are not that different from the rest of the world.

I think we can confirm Australia is the most racist country in the world.
lol

and everyone tries so hard to convince everyone else that they're not racist and omg we must feed all poor kids in africa and omg poor aboriginals we stole thier land and children.
Even though there are issues like that, aussies go over the top in trying to convnince everyone that they're the most altruistic fuckers in the world.

Why? In of a country with 22million+ people it's pretty much assumed there's going to be at least thousands of people who are racist. There's a % of racist people in every country. This incident means nothing for judging prevalence (e.g. "most racist") because of sample size. There's plenty of asians crying in this thread but if you looked you could find individual racist incidents in their beloved countries too.

I was being sarcastic. XD It is stupid to think that Australia is any more racist than other countries, you go to anywhere in Asia, the Middle East, or particularly if you're black and you go down to the southern states of the US and you will be discriminated.

If you look at the question simply, then yes, Australia is racist, and so is every other country. However if the question was 'Is Australia more racist than other countries?', then the answer could be maybe, maybe not.

Another factor is how racism is portrayed in the country.

Personally, I get offended when people(especially of British descent) say things like "This isn't your land" because frankly, they stole it from the Aboriginal people. My background is Chinese, my parents moved to Australia for somewhere better to live that wasn't crowded, and I'm pretty sure the convicts from around 1788 came here because the prisons in England were full.

People can do things like ignore someone of a certain race/background, which is annoying, but at least they don't say anything that makes them strongly racist.

There's always bogans in every country. Compared with other countries, Australia has probably the most inclusive multicultural policy in the world.
