Year 10 Subject Selections (1 Viewer)

Hi all!
I'm currently in the process of subject selection (which will happen first week - after the holidays) and I'm strong in the English and Humanities subjects. These are my current preferences:

1. English Advanced
2. SOR II (I attend a Catholic school)
3. Ancient History
4. Legal Studies
5. Society & Culture
6. CAFS

I'm currently deciding between:
a) Modern and Ancient
b) Legal and Business

and whether I should scrap S&C and replace it with Modern

*I'm not that great with numbers so please don't chuck in Economics or Science related

Subject suggestions and current or past experiences with these subjects would be greatly appreciated!

An interesting selection of subjects!

Can I ask what your ATAR goal is, and what you'd like to study at a tertiary level (if that is your plan)? This is all very relevant for subject selection.

Since you're strong in humanities subjects, I'd definitely recommend a history as it develops your critical thinking skills, your ability to appreciate how and why texts are written and your own writing ability. Whether that is Ancient or Modern or both is up to you. What aspects of history do you enjoy studying? Modern History covers history in the 20th Century (1900s) predominantly, with primary focus on the World Wars and Australia's connections with countries (i.e Britain, USA). Ancient History covers much older parts of history, and there's much more time difference between events you study. Some aspects of Ancient include ancient Egypt, ancient Rome and ancient Greek civilizations. In terms of scaling, Modern History tends to do better, but only by a slight amount. If you do a history, you'll have the opportunity to study History Extension in Year 12, which is essentially the history of history and involves a lot of historiography.

In regards to Legal and Business, this is again something to do with what you enjoy, and possibly what you want to do after school. The subjects are pretty self-explanatory; Legal Studies covers how you as an individual are seen by the legal system, how you as a citizen can participate in the legal system and how the legal system works and operates. Doing legal does not mean you're a lawyer at the end, and it covers very little of the university course - just keep that in mind. Business Studies gives an insight into how business' manage, direct and organise staff, and the processes involved in making and maintaining a business, whether that is a small, medium or large business. In terms of scaling, Legal does marginally better than Business.

I noticed you don't want to do any level of mathematics. You will not be able to get into some courses without doing maths, because it is a prerequisite or assumed knowledge, so be 100% certain this is what you want.

I've done the whole Matrix ATAR calculator and I've gotten 93+

Sounds good, and the subjects you're choosing are very relevant to what you're thinking about.

It's still a very good idea to do General Mathematics. In the interviews for university, even for education, they'd like to see that you're balanced in subject selection, and they look out for maths. It's your choice, but General Maths is highly recommendable. Since you're not sure about Society and Culture, putting maths there is a good idea.

Modern History covers history in the 20th Century (1900s) predominantly, with primary focus on the World Wars and Australia's connections with countries (i.e Britain, USA).

Modern History DOES NOT specifically cover Australia's perspective, involvement or connection to anything. Don't worry, it's nothing like the dreadful 7-10 history everyone hates.

Just to clear things up, Modern scales significantly better than Ancient/Legal/Business, and even more so if you get a low band 6 and above (91-ish+ I think).

But apparently we have to interview the subject teachers which is going to be the death of me because thinking on the spot is not for me D:

Heh, it's not like that.

It is said to be noticeably harder by most people. So I'd consider it a fact.

I'm thinking of doing Ancient, but I had an interview two days ago with my History teacher that I've had for three years and he asked me about the parts that I liked in Year 10 History.
Me: "I liked the whole communism situation, Stalin, Marx, Petrov Affair"
Him: "So you like political history?"
Me: "Yeah"

And at the end of the interview he asked if I was doing History next year, so I said that I'd be doing Ancient. He put me on this guilt trip "Well I'd suggest that you should really listen carefully during the subject talks and there's no point in putting a bright student into a subject which they don't like and end up not doing well in it"

The problem is that I'm choosing Ancient because there are way less more essays and responses and I really miss Year 7 History where we learnt about Egyptian society and their gods and goddesses.

I'd love to do Modern (bc hey Hitler, Romanov Dynasty), it's just the fact that:
- There are so many responses that I may not have the energy to balance out all of my subjects and end up concentrating on one (where it scales higher) and not the rest of my other subjects
- With Legal and S&C I'd have a high workload
- I've learnt some of the Modern stuff in 9 & 10 anyway
- The teachers who are taking up the Ancient classes next year are just superb
- If I do both, I might get overwhelmed by such a vast array of historical dates, events and people
