hey,

I have been searching this site for hours and had come across a Raw Mark database which consist of peoples past raw marks. The link is below for the people who has not yet seen it but i am having little trouble understanding it.

Just say i did english advance and for my HSC mark i got 68.10 (as seen in the database under English Advanced 2011). I understand that this is my raw mark. The next column is TWM and from my understanding this is a scale of the paper to show the difficulty of the option i had picked. so it aligns to a 78. From there the paper is further aligned to show the difficulty of the subject so it aligns to a 85. This is the mark that will appear in my HSC certificate. So from 68.10 it jumped to 85. cool.

So far am i right? I`m am also wondering, which mark would contribute to my atar? the 68.10 or the 85?

I am doing the following subjects; Math 2 and 3unit, Physics, Biology, Ancient and English Advanced. From this database if I get just say 70`s in everything i would be looking at a decent Atar 85 or more.

EA- 70 will go up to 88
PHY- 70 ---- 86
Math 2U- 70-----78 or more
Math 3U- 53--- close to 87
AH- 70--------- 85
Bio- 70------86

is this the case? or too good to be true?

Raw data base below:

I'm curious about this too... What's scaling then? does the 86 from Biology get scaled up or the 70

to my understanding, the 86 is the aligned mark and this is what goes on your certificate. As for which one gets scaled and which one contributes to your final Atar mark is what i dont know?

N/A
but does this scaled up mark count to the total atar? So for ancient would 85 count to my total Atar/Aggregate? (mark out of 500)
After you get your aligned mark, say 85 for ancient and 85 for chemistry
This is where scaling comes in

So ancient will contribute X points to your aggregate and chemistry will contribute Y points to your aggregate

Because chemistry scales better than ancient, the 85 in chemistry will contribute more to your aggregate than the 85 from ancient.

This is my understanding of it anyway

hmm... So just saying i got both 85 in Chem and Ancient. you had said that X and Y amount of points will go to my aggregate. but Chem will contribute more. When you say more do you mean more than 85 or less? how amount for ancient, more or less than my aligned mark?

for the subjects i am doing, would the scaling be lower than my aligned mark?

OP,

The final aligned marks that appear on your HSC reports have nothing to do with your ATAR.

The UAC receives your TWM (the total raw mark after "Option" scaling) from the BOS.
UAC then does its own scaling on the TWM.

But, it does not matter much if UAC uses the final aligned mark or the TWM,
because the distribution of marks will still be the same.

Your position on the bell tower curve (relative to all other HSC candidates in the same subject) will still be the same,
regardless if UAC uses the TWM (78, for english as you have stated) or the final aligned mark (85).

If your TWM ranks you to be in the middle of all HSC students in the English course,
then you will also be in the middle for the final aligned mark.

So, let's suppose your 68 in english aligns to 85 in english...
It does not matter which number UAC uses in scaling,
since there will be many other students who also have their TWM raws aligned UP.
EDIT: I would say all students will have their TWM raws aligned UP,
unless if they scored 0 or 100% raw.)

UAC uses the TWM raw rather than the final aligned mark to minimise errors
(especially since the final aligned marks are only displayed as integers,
rather than decimals on your HSC report).
Does this mean the aligned mark is used for ATAR? If so say I got 70 in Eng. Advance then it will get aligned up to 88 (from above) for my ATAR calculation?

hey. utopianradical

just had a look at your Raw marks. Congrats on math. Wanting the same mark.

so lets take a look at your Physics;

Physics: 72/100 RAW = 85/100 Aligned

Section A (Multiple Choice): 18/20
Section B (Short Answer): 38/55
Section C (Option - From Quanta To Quarks): 18/25

TOTAL - 74/100
SCALED TOTAL - 72/100 (The Quanta option scaled down in HSC 2011)
EXAM MARK 85/100

So your exam mark 85/100 has nothing to do with your Atar. Could you please explain how your physics mark contributed to your Atar? (so would they take the 72 or 85)
Also if you dont mind me asking what was your Atar with the marks you received?

As he said before they take the TWM (72) since its more accurate
however it doesn't really matter since twm and aligned mark correlate

when you say the twm and aligned mark correlates does that mean the 72 would scale close to a 85? also when they scale, does anyone know how much is roughly scales? (i know it cchanges every year, so as an estimate?)

BOS sends the "72", not the "85", to UAC.
But UAC does not merely add the "72" to calculate my ATAR... that "72" gets scaled to a different number.

My ATAR was 86.9 .... (My english raw of 55% dragged me down real hard). [/QUOTE]

I`m getting there, so your Atar was 86.9. From what i have learnt today, the UAC only took the following marks from you;

English: 55/100
Physics: 72/100
Chem: 53/100
Math: 99/120
IT: 43/100
Economics: 65/100

they had then scaled each mark (taken your best 8 units and 2 units English) and from there gave you a aggregate mark out of 500.

(i`m guessing that these are the marks for your HSC only..... if so was your school marks close to these results?)

1 last thing, to apply for all your raw marks do you have to pay like 35$ for each subject or can you appeal to the bos?

Edit:
OOOOH.... I just remembered

The BOS adds the TWM (for exam raw), and the raw moderated assessment mark (school raw) to find the average (the raw HSC mark).
This raw HSC mark is the number that the BOS sends to the UAC.

Oops..... the TWM exam raw is only half the story.

Sorry if I misled you!

If you do purchase your raw marks.... you will only get your raw exam marks..... maybe you could appeal to see your internal raw moderated school marks.
(But I'm not sure if appeals for internal moderated raws are possible).
Ok i see, so for you they would have taken your HSC marks (external marks) + your school raw marks (does your raw school mark also get scaled...... so i will be doing physics and just say i get 65% for my internal marks will this raw mark be scaled by the UAC?). That makes sense now.

were your school marks close to your marks you had got in the HSC? if so that means your subjects scaled for you perfect (except for English.... but everyone knows English is a BITCH to understand)

English isn't hard to understand.... but It's hard to mind-dump ideas onto a paper at a rate of 1000 words in 40 minutes.... I just can't manage that.
I wasn't good at memory... so I couldn't properly remember my quotes for the essays and short stories.
But I did quite well for section 1 of paper 1... where the answers could be derived from the exam paper.

But English standard is still a "bltch" subject... because of "option" scaling.
Yeah, my teacher had told me that if i do drop down to standard my atar will go down the drain. Thats means no chance of getting an atar of > 85% (my atar goal). Cant wait to prove her wrong. Advance sucks in every angle.

For physics, what you learn in yr 11 how much do you need to remember in yr 12. My teacher told me everything? is this true or is she like my English teacher?
