We generally put the equation of a line into

y=mx+b

But why can't we use x such that:

x=y/m+a?

$y = mx + b$

$x = \frac{y}{m} - b$

$x = \frac{y}{m} + a, \;$where$\; a=-b,\; a\;$and$\; b \;$are real numbers.$$

$The answer to your question, it is conventional to write a linear equation is general form:$\; ax+by+c=0, \;$or for a equation of a straight line, intercept form:$\;y=mx+b. \;$But the general form I claim is more useful (for quicker computation) if you choose to do maths at a further level.$
