Hey how are ya?

I've decided to go with 1131 for my first year mathematics course but reading one of the threads where someone asked the same question, the perks of doing 1141 look very appealing however the cons of the X questions look minimal possibly. I did mathematics 2 unit for the HSC and got 80. To be honest this years test was more for the ext 1 students, i think i couldve gotten much higher. However as a result im doing a bridging course now and find it to be alright. But i just wonder whether i have the potential as to paraphrase one of the responders, that more people fail in maths 1131 then 1141 becuase of the scaling i think. i am willing to put in the effort but effort can only get you so far as i am doing an engineering and arts degree so time and effort is questionable.

Thankyou for your thoughts:jump:

yes, it is worth it. l found math1131 quite easy after completing it and l regret not taking math1141, and l'm sure many others feel the same way. there are not that many [X] questions, but more importantly the class tests which are worth 20% of your course are the same for math1131 and math1141 students. that gives math1141 students a much bigger advantage when you include the scaling.
yes, the final exam is harder in the sense that it contains extra material but through effort you can get a decent mark. the stats prove it. math1141 students get more HDs and fail less than math1131 students.

More people fail in 1131 because they're not capable of the higher standard, simple.

The content isn't hard at all, it's just MX1 and MX2 revision mostly with like matrices chucked in.

If you are capable or feel you are, then take 1141.

Wouldn't this mostly be due to the fact that the more math inclined students do 1141 where as there are people who have done 2u taking on 1131. Clearly most students who can get a HD in 1131 would be doing 1141 as well so that explains the fail and HD rates.
I chose to do 1131 simply because 1141 would fuck my time table and on top of that I'm not a big math lover despite getting the recommended marks to do 1141. Just doesn't seem worth extra work when I'm not doing a math based degree and you can get a HD in 1131 after all.

-can-, yes.

But remember, MATH1131 and MATH1141 are marked on a common scale so you'll find maybe 90%+ of the HDs will go to people in MATH1141 because they are, on the whole, far more capable.

I heard that this software must be learn independently for us students.

Maple is easy. Learn/do the quizzes with your friends.

There are tutorials on the UNSW maths website, so you aren't just left in the dark.

That's my point exactly it's the students more than the course. If you're capable of a HD in 1141 you should be able to get one in 1131 as well. After all the only scaling is on half of the final exam (its 2/4 questions I called and found out) however if you're capable of a HD in 1141 you should be doing it unless you don't want the extra math or have issues with timetabling.

Engineering is still Math based quite a bit.

Can anyone justify this? If you can get a HD in 1141, is it easy to get a HD in 1131?

Being capable does not mean it's easy. You may require more effort in MATH1131 than in MATH1141 to get a HD.

You would need to master the topics that are mutual between MATH1131 and MATH1141 in order to be as competitive as a MATH1141 student because they cover more topics where the questions are harder. Whether that correlates to being easy is purely up to the individual.

It is not as simple as saying all students who received a HD in MATH1141 would have gotten a HD in MATH1131. On face value, it would be because that is the intention of scaling; in reality, maybe not so much.

To get a HD in MATH1131, it would be more of a factor of whether you can perfect exam techniques or not. Silly mistakes would cost you a lot. In MATH1141 on the other hand, it would be more of a matter of whether you can achieve consistently in it to get that HD. Silly mistakes won't be as punishing in MATH1141 than MATH1131.
