So...

I want to do a double major. I'm definitely going to major in accounting but I don't know what the other should be. I'm leaning towards HR management, business law or finance.

Now I'm not particularly great at math & didn't do it in high school. I managed a 93 in legal studies and enjoyed it. In business studies I enjoyed the management bit (particularly the theories we learned).

Finance is looking like a good option in terms of job prospects but the math... It scares me. If anyone has done finance or is completing to now please do advise on how difficult it would be or why you're particularly good at it.

Thanks all!

You really, really shouldn't pick courses on "job prospects" because you may find that you experience what happened to me - boredom and disillusionment with it all, because you're not doing something you enjoy.

Do what you like. Also, Finance's maths is piss easy anyway - now, a lot of people struggled with it, but to me and others, it was a joke.

I'm looking more towards the infs pathway.

well. I'm currently working at a consulting firm ATM, so that work exp should help me differentiate myself from a large majority of comm. grads.

I like the confidence.

Consulting Firm in first year? Impressive. Where are you working, if you don't mind me asking?

In Hong Kong. Been working for a month. It specialises in new business start up, but also does the usual consulting stuff such as accounting. I can't really give details regarding the firm's name out in a public domain, if that's what you were enquiring about.

I've got a job... So I'll have accounting experience when I finish uni.
Pretty good then :)

Oh well, if you're intending to stick with straight comm, majoring in accounting, don't bother too much with finance, business law may help (especially for CA/CPA), or even human resources (as you may want to move around to human resources - I've been told that it's good especially if you are good with talking and dealing with people; just don't let your impression of MGMT1001 refrain you from doing further MGMT courses)

Finance iirc is pretty bad also seeing as there are over thousands of graduates every year doing finance majors, and whats worse is that finance jobs tend to take more actuarial, mathematics, statistics, physics, comp sci, software engo and engineering graduates in general, as opposed to JUST finance graduates.

As for finance maths, first year course is basically easy stuff; rearranging equations. Second year stuff requires things like learning matrices (from what I've been told) and harder stuff, maybe involving statistics?

I'm thinking human resources is a better option for me. Most people sound like they really struggle applying theories to scenarios but I've found I'm better with hypotheticals. We'll see how I go in MGMT1001, it can't be that bad. I've gone through the textbook and it looks pretty stock standard. I enjoy learning in general (unless it's purely math - then nah I'm gonna catch some zzz).

I'm worried about group work at uni cos of my whole working situation. People are gonna get annoyed with me when they want to do a study session lol, unless of course they're all lazy...

Gah, I can't wait to start. I hope the eagerness doesn't wear out too quickly & I hope I don't actually suck at accounting theory.
