Hi everyone, so in my half yearly mathematics assessment I got 80% because I didn't see the back page. Otherwise I got all of the questions I attempted, correct. In my term 1 assessment I got 97% because of silly mistakes.

Do I still have a chance at state ranking mathematics with these bad marks? I did a few mathematics hsc past papers and am losing 2 - 3 mark max, and I really think if I work hard I can get 0 wrong ie full marks in the external. Do you guys think I can state rank with this situation? Thanks. My school ranking is 203.

i may be wrong but i thought state ranks were based on just what you get in the hsc alone?

EDIT
This is from the board of studies
"Students are ranked by their HSC mark. Where students have equal HSC marks, they are then ranked by the average of their examination marks and their assessment marks, each taken to one decimal place. In the case of extension courses, marks awarded for other courses in the subject area are also taken into consideration when students are tied."

so i guess your internal rank may impact your rank in the state.

no you will not be able to (probably).

there are students now who would are probably on 100% average in internal assessments and are likely to smash the 2U exam out of the park. So it would be unlikely unless everyone of those students as a bad exam day

The marks themselves are irrelevant technically. If you are ranked first outright (no tie), then you can state rank if you do well enough externally.

Whether we say you can or you can't should be independent of how you perform, if you genuinely want the state rank (which you can't really predict since there could very well be 20 students who get 100.0).

Bluntly put, if you are not first in school by the HSC, your chance of a state rank is basically zero. Last year, James Ruse had 3 in the top 20, Baulkham Hills had 2, Sydney Boys had 2. The other schools listed only had 1 in the top 20. So it's clear that you must be first, especially since you are competing with the best of the best, because if you are not first, then the person above you must pretty much get a state rank as well, and statistically speaking, schools that collectively outperform yours are usually the schools that have more than 1 state rank.

I've always wondered how intelligent people can forget to turn the last page.

Happened to me in a half yearly exam back in the day, there was a multiple choice and short answer section and I didn't see the short answer section. Top 15's wasn't that bad :)
