I haven't done it yet, but I reckon you need some practice and stuff. Like reading critically and understanding people, playing with shapes and stuff. Tutoring doesn't seem necessary because someone cant make you think critically. They can help but you'll need to put in the effort. I reckon it's possible without tutoring but you will need to do a lot of preparation.

IQ tests can sort of prepare you for some sections of the umat.

The logical deduction of patterns is similar to the ones in IQ tests.

No and you do not need tutoring for it but might be worthwhile to practice for it.

You're pretty optimistic but the realistic nature is 1 out of 15 students applying get into medicine.

I know of two people who didn't get tutored at all - did a few past papers and got 98%tile on their first go. UMAT is hit and miss, but sometimes tutoring can help if you are completely lost. Another friend got ~60%tile first go and then took a gap year, redid (with tutoring) and got 96%tile. Its up to you but I don't think it is paramount.

The UMAT is meant to be hard, but you can definitely prepare for it. I don't know about private tutoring, but I found that just doing HEAPS of papers and drills from various sources was really beneficial. As you do more and more practice and read the worked solutions/explanations, you gradually learn the techniques that you need and the proper 'way-of-thinking'. So if you just put in the effort, AMAZING results are possible.

Look mate you're in yr 10. The fact that your name is 'futuremedstudent' is somehow giving me the idea that you really want to get into medicine. That's fine I guess, but seeing as you're in yr 10 there's some hard truths you should face now so you don't get bitterly disappointed later down the track. Don't invest too much time and emotion solely into the prospect of getting into medicine. Yes you should be aiming for the best results you can possible get, but like square said, you've gotta be realistic. With the admission rate into med programs being something like 3-5% (engineering is like 85% for reference) and every tom, dick and harry trying to get in, things are looking statistically bleak. There's guaranteed to be a whole bunch of talented and bright kids that genuinely put their best efforts into getting in, but don't. Yet everyone thinks they're the statistical exception.

Anyway what I'm saying is that if you latch onto, and commit to, this idea of medicine so early you're gonna be so much more disheartened if you don't make it through. I'm not trying to be rude, but a lot of students in yr 10 will generally lack the maturity to full comprehend what a career in medicine actually entails. Check out many of the posts made by Medman if you don't believe me. Don't get suckered into this idea of medicine cos of the prestige, of being able to call yourself "Dr" and impressing people, and because of wanting to make your Asian dad proud. This is the part where you tell me that's not the reason why you want to go into medicine, something something helping people.

Believe me I've been through all this crap. Top of all my classes for years, people have been telling me I should become a doctor, this that. Been studying for the UMAT since December last year, week in week out and what do I have to show for it? 50th percentiles and a raw mark that never changes.

Ask yourself why you want to do this - and not just superficially. You have over 2 years to fully think it through. My best advice to you now would mostly be to CHILL THE HELL OUT (I saw in another thread you study for 10 hours a day? I'm sorry but in yr 10 that's not commendable that's mentally ill). I'm telling you that because I'm sure you're going to get fantastic results and kill it - but are you the 4%, or will you ever be the 4% for that matter?

Lol what about me?

I think it comes down to your interests. If your interests entails studying for 10hrs a day go for it, if it maintains your interest. Only problem I see is if in the interview they ask for other activities outside of study you may have screwed yourself over in that area.

Also I believe everyone's reason for existence needs to be for a purpose greater than themselves whether it be to change people's lives etc. If your sole goal is to get into medicine, what will happen next? You have spent all your days chasing that goal and once it's attained what then? You need to have a reason for getting into medicine.

True emilios, but he will understand by year 12. Everyone does. But for your question yes it is hard (For me section 2 and problem solving). Dont go tutoring though. Just practice papers. Personally I think I have a 0.1% chance of making it in. Medman, Reason doesnt suffice, nor does hardwork. I had a reason, a reason I would say, But no It doesnt count to much, if you are not competitive.

In reference to what I said; your posts tend to de-glamorize the idea of medicine and inform people of some of the tough truths of it. This is good as medicine is held up on such a high pedestal by everybody and actually having someone who's in the field discuss it brings an element of reality to it.

Mate, firstly I'm not mentally ill so please don't call me that. I'm accelerated in 3 subs and I am starting year 12 soon.
2. I know what med is like cos both my parents are doctors and I have actually sat and listened to some of the tutorials and lectures at unsw. So I can actually comprehend the harsh reality.
3. I want to be a doctor not for the asian dad expectations, not for the $ and not for the prestige purely because I have a interest in med and if mad was a low prestige or low $ job I would still do it.
4. Yeah I'm that 4%. I am topping 3 subjects at school.

I'm not screwed because I did 7th grade music, I have competed at state for athletics, I have done debating, I volunteer at a local hospital, I'm a peer support and src leader.
I want to get into med cos I am topping 3 of my subjects (top 10 ranked school), I have the right skills to be a doctor and I believe that this career is appropriate for me.
