Just wondering what the general consensus is on thoughts about those socialist alternative muppets?

Considering I'm doing a B. Economics I'm bred to dislike them but even on the way they act and carry on I don't like them, what about you guys?

I don't think we need to bring up the emotional turmoil.

Beats Young Libs.
While you may be less politically in agreement with the young libs, Im not aware of them having remotely the same annoying presence on campus that the socialist alternative has. From my experience the young libs, like the other political groups, tend to focus more on their own society rather than targeting everyone at uni

Don't even get me started.

They are loud, obnoxious, violent, and unbelievably stubborn, which they use to their advantage to draw the attention away from their flawed logic and lack of intelligent arguments. And worst of all, they're the biggest hypocrites I have ever seen. I'm generally pretty tolerant of people with differing political views to mine, but after seeing what they have done in pursuit of those views, I have no respect at all for anyone in the Socialist Alternative.

But I do take solace in the fact that after university they will never hold any real positions of power. Their past will come back to haunt them.

Sums up everything I was thinking and was curious if it were the general opinion (y)

And I too (believe) am tolerant of opposing political views, I just don't try to shut them down like SA

I don't always object to what they stand for, but I do often object to how they go about expressing themselves.

They produced Tony Abbot so they are worse by default.

Agreed with this.

They make me laugh in pity so much. Some of their 'causes' are good, others arent so good but the way they go about everything, as evidenced, in that is pretty pathetic.

Every time I hear about them, I think of the line from that teacher in 10 Things I Hate About You "I know how difficult it must be for you to overcome all those years of upper middle-class suburban oppression."

I generally agree with their causes, but wow I wish they would calm the fuck down. Each time I cave and sign a petition, I regret it. One of them gave me the grouchiest look when I declined to buy their newspaper or sign up for a protest after I indulged them for 10 minutes (I guess they were hoping for a convert?). Their obnoxious hard-sell attitude is a complete turn off, and excludes anyone who may have been curious about their politics had it been presented in a sane manner.

I was naive enough to actually stop and talk to a few of them at O-week. Their causes were something of interest to me. But as soon as one of them said something to the effect of "We do not agree with the ideology of Stalin, we follow the writings of Leon Trotsky (whom you probably haven't heard of)" I knew I had to get out of there.
I am Russian, my great-grandmother lived through the revolution and her descendants, including my mum, grew up and lived in the USSR. I know exactly who Trotsky is. And his works are fucking terrifying.

Haha they said the same to me, guess it was bad luck that I'd just got a Band 6 in Modern History studying Soviet Russia and Leon Trotsky.... the guy would randomly shoot 1 in 10 conscripted soldiers to instill fear and gain unconditional obedience. He may have been just as bad as Stalin had Lenin not died when he did

I'm sure the conservative circles are well aware of the political landscape at USYD.

Being too outspoken at a university which is slanted towards the left wouldn't bode well so any activism on their part tends to be more passive (e.g. social media, student elections, etc.).

Keep in mind, that the clubs associated with the other mainstream political parties tend to keep a low profile as well (at least officially). The SA is regarded as the 'extreme left' and is even subject to derision from those in the centre left. They are very much an outlier.

Yeah, I agree. I think I'd be considered left but seriously, SA is just mental.
