I just got beaten in the English Adv course by half a percent. The problem is that 70% of our course mark came from assignments and only 30% from actual exams (10% hy and 20% trial, how retarded is that?). I beat the guy that came first by the order of like 10-15% in both the hy and trial, but he beat me in the assignments (he spoke for 13mins for a 10min speech and got 20/20 lol what is justice).

My question is this: it is very likely I will beat him in the external HSC. It's not out of the question that he will underperform. If I am aiming for 94+ in English Adv, does this seriously compromise my chances? Or does the miniscule difference between us nullify this? I know that your external mark remains the same, but if I get, say, 95 external and he gets 85 external, does my internal mark become 85? Cos if so then that's actual bullshit.

No...your internal marks are according to how your entire cohort performs, e.g. rank 10 gets the 10th highest HSC mark. There's also a chance you guys share the same rank as well, so you might end up getting the same "internal" assessment mark.

That's exactly what I meant though... rank 2 gets 2nd highest HSC mark correct? So if i beat him in the HSC, I get his cruddy mark as my internal?

Not necessarily. Other people can score a mark higher than his so you may not necessarily get his mark.

My point is that I'm still limited by my cohort aren't I? Far out, I don't want anyone else's mark I want my own.

Yes you are but that's only half your final HSC mark. You still get to keep half your external mark. The whole point of post trials to HSC is to work with your cohort to achieve the best possible set of marks.

It is to my understanding that the BOS doesn't take only your rank but also the relative gaps between each rank. If you are only half a percent behind him then this actually may mean that your rank does not matter because the gap is very little. If you are rank 10 you won't get the 10th highest mark that your cohort achieved in the HSC. BOS actually collects all of your cohort's marks and redistributes them to you, in accordance to your rank AND the gap between you and 1st place. So the smaller the gap, the higher chance that you will get a higher mark. With this said, the minuscule difference between you will likely be nullified if you do well in the HSC, and your cohort does well in the HSC. The better your cohort does, BOS will have mor marks to distribute to your cohort and to you.

To correct some comments here:
The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, ... ranked individuals do NOT get the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, ... highest exam marks for their assessment.
The final assessment marks will preserve the ranking, but do not align to specific exam marks.

Marks are sent in to the nearest whole number. You may be equal first.

the marks are sent to the nearest whole number but the ranks that schools work out can use decimal places to calculate the differences.
Schools don't submit ranks, only marks. If they send in two equal marks then those two people have the same rank.
