Hey, was just wondering if anyone could give me a run down on the effects of having a 1st internal assessment ranking in terms of what it means for my external HSC and ultimately ATAR?

I'm currently coming first in Business Studies, Modern History, Standard English and Society & Culture (Ancient History is my 5th subject which will count in which I'm currently ranked 2nd in). All my cohorts are around 10-16 people with the exception of Standard English which is around 50-60ish kids.

I've heard that for the subjects I'm coming first in if I get the highest mark in the external exam my internal assessment mark will be replaced by my external HSC mark (So my final mark will just be 100% my HSC mark) - However if I don't get 1st in the HSC external exam I take whoever in the cohort got the highest mark and so my final HSC mark for the subject is 50% my internal assessment mark (Once moderated) and 50% the person in my cohort who got the highest mark?

That's what I understand about it so far, obviously I shouldn't worry about it and just do my best although I'm curious about how it all works since the course I want to get into is quite competitive. In terms of rank my school fluctuates, was in the 200s in 2012 but last year was in the late 400s.

Thanks and best of luck to everyone sitting their HSC this year!

That's correct.
Essentially being number 1 is awesome since if you screw up your cohort will do the work for you and you get the highest mark as you said.

Great, appreciate the links seventhroot I'll read over them later when I've got more time but a shorter answer was what I was after. Can anyone confirm this though? I mean to me that just sounds a bit unfair, I got pretty decent marks in all my internals and I know there are students who are guaranteed to get a HSC external exam mark although probably not as high as mine not too far behind, obviously I wouldn't even consider doing such a thing because I want to do my 100% best - But what incentive is there for me to just #yolo it and leech off them?

Haha don't get me wrong I'd never do something like that, but that said I know a fair few that who in my position wouldn't even try for the HSC if the system allowed them to effectively not even study for the HSC and still get a pretty decent mark, was wondering if there was some sort of preventative thing in place. But yeah, thanks for your help guys!

Ranked 1st means highest external mark becomes your internal mark.

You keep you own exam mark at all times.

So if you come first on the exam then the exam mark will become your internal mark as well but...

if you come anywhere other than first you keep your exam mark and take the highest exam mark by another student as your internal mark. Those two marks are then averaged to give you your final HSC mark.

e.g. first exam mark by another student - 88 - your mark was 86 - final HSC mark 87
